- Editor’s note: The mail-in ballot question for Tonganoxie residents that is due back to the Leavenworth County Clerk’s Office by Feb. 28 asks whether the city should replace the current 3/4-cent sales tax for the Tonganoxie Water Park that is set to expire with a 20-year tax at the same rate. The tax would go toward building a new library, as well as infrastructure projects. There is a possibility that ground will be available on the former Tonganoxie Elementary School campus for a new library, but that is not yet settled.

- Tonganoxie VFW Post 9271 and its Women’s Auxiliary sponsored a pizza dinner Thursday for its local Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy winners.
Students then presented their winning essays after the dinner.

- A jury convicted a 24-year-old man of two counts aggravated indecent liberties with a child under the age of 14 and two counts aggravated indecent solicitation with a child after a week-long jury trial in Leavenworth County District Court.
The jury heard evidence regarding Nicholas Clark, a former employee of the Youth Center at Fort Leavenworth, soliciting a then-13-year-old girl who attended the Center in August 2014.

- “Tonganoxie Phil” saw his shadow Friday morning, and predicted another six more weeks of winter. Stevens began his career as Tonganoxie Phil several years ago when a KBEQ radio disc jockey contacted him. Stevens said he thinks it started because Tonganoxie sounds a bit like Punxsutawney and perhaps the DJ picked up a phone book selecting the first Phil he came across.
