Kansas Turnpike encourages work zone safety with contest for students

In preparation for National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 3-7, the Kansas Turnpike Authority is holding its second annual design contest for teen students in grades 8-12. The week aims to raise awareness about fatality prevention while traveling through work zones.
Blood drive is next week in Tonganoxie

Multiple celebrations planned for Kansas Day

The Sunflower State turns 156 on Sunday and various groups will be celebrating. Holy-Field Winery in Basehor will celebrate with cake, wine and music from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the winery, 18807 158th St. Kansas Day at the Capitol will start at 11 a.m. Friday at the Statehouse in Topeka on the first-floor rotunda. The Kansas Historical Society also will celebrate Friday with activities 9 a.m.-3 p.m. with Kansas Day at the Museum at the Kansas Museum of History, 6425 SW 6th Ave., Topeka. Tonganoxie High boys get 1st victory at home tournament

The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team has its first victory of the season thanks to its home tournament. THS played De LaSalle in the seventh-place game Saturday. De LaSalle didn’t have any games otherwise in the tournament, but was penciled in to take on a team in the losers bracket for seventh place.
Mat finish for Tonganoxie wrestlers

Tonganoxie High has another tournament title to its credit this wrestling season. This time, it’s in the form of a dual championship. THS placed first Friday in the De Soto dual tournament after defeating the host school, 53-27, in the championship match. Bonner Springs defeated Shawnee Mission North, 48-24, for third, while Pleasant Ridge outlasted Wyandotte, 33-24, for fifth. Piper beat Kansas City Washington, 30-27, for seventh place.

John Taylor, editor of the Lansing Current newspaper, also will become editor of the Mirror and the Sentinel. Dorothy Korb’s farm has been named a 2006 soil conservation award winner. Ron and Barbara Ernzen and Brian Potter also were honored.
