September 27, 2017
The Tonganoxie High volleyball team keeps plugging away. The Chieftains had a rough showing at the Tonganoxie Invitational on Saturday, as the squad went 1-3 on the day at its home meet. The tourney performance dropped the Chieftains to 7-10 on the season, but THS turned right around Monday with a couple of victories on the road.
Hot (pink) shot for Tonganoxie High golfer
September 27, 2017
Brenn Shryock checked off a golf rarity Monday in Ozawkie, something no one in the Tonganoxie High boys program has done in some 15 years of existence. And Shryock has only been golfing for a couple months. The THS junior made a hole-in-one at Village Greens Golf Course during a tournament Jeff West was hosting. It was No. 16. Par 3 at 78 yards.

Tonganoxie soccer wins overtime thriller, stays unbeaten
September 27, 2017
Whether by rout or rally, the Tonganoxie High boys soccer team has found various ways to win. On Friday, the Chieftains had arguably their most exciting match of the season. Playing against Maranatha in Shawnee, Tonganoxie played catch up much of the night. Although THS led, 1-0, in the first half, the Chieftains trailed, 3-1, at one point in the second half. But once again, Tonganoxie battled back.
Tonganoxie football stays undefeated with victory against Bonner Springs
September 27, 2017
Last year, Tonganoxie was rolling heading into its game against Bonner Springs. Then BSHS tripped up the visiting Chieftains, 21-12, handing them their first loss of the season. Key injuries started to mount and THS went 2-4 after the 3-0 start. This year is different. Tonganoxie held on for a 28-18 victory Friday, improving to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Kaw Valley League. Tonganoxie got on the board first and led, 14-6, after the first quarter. The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter and didn’t score in the third quarter. Tonganoxie outscored Bonner, 8-6, in the fourth quarter and held on for the victory. Bonner Springs fell to 2-2 with the loss.
Autographed memories at former Tonganoxie Elementary School
September 27, 2017
Brian Welsh remembers his name and those of classmates being etched in history at the former Tonganoxie Elementary School. Crews renovated the former stage in the north gymnasium and turned it into a music room for grades 4-6 before the start of the 1994-95 school year. Welsh, who graduated in 2001, was a sixth-grader in 1994-95. His music teacher at the time had sixth-graders — and only that year’s sixth-graders — sign a wall in the room, as Welsh recalled.
Kobach calls NFL players ‘unpatriotic,’ ‘ignorant’
September 27, 2017
Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, no stranger to the culture wars in America, dived headlong into another one Monday, calling NFL players who protest during the national anthem “unpatriotic” and “ignorant.” In an opinion piece written for the conservative website Breitbart, the Republican firebrand who is now running for governor said the practice of some players kneeling instead of standing with their hand over their hearts during the anthem “has gone from being a stunt to a plague that is infecting the whole league.”
