Tonganoxie Business Association meetings Fridays at Brothers Market

The next Tonganoxie Business Association meeting will be 8 a.m. Friday at Brothers Market in its dining area. Meetings are 8 a.m. Fridays and are open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to attend.
Produce available Tuesdays in downtown Tonganoxie

Visitors can pick up produce at noon Tuesdays in the Mutual Savings parking lot just west of Good Shepherd Thrift Store and Food Bank. People providing the produce will let visitors know if there will not be produce the next Tuesday.
Homecoming to be Piper game Sept. 29 at Tonganoxie High

Tonganoxie High School Homecoming will be Sept. 28. There will be a half-day of school that day and an afternoon parade, performances and student speakers on Fourth Street. Special activities to incorporate middle school and elementary school students also are being planned for that day. The parade is open to everyone, but students at TES and TMS can only attend if they go with parents or other means outside of school. A reception and induction of this year’s Tonganoxie Education Hall of Fame class also will take place that day. THS takes on Piper in the homecoming game, with homecoming royalty crowning taking place before the game and hall-of-fame.
Tonganoxie Water Park season finishing up Monday

Swim enthusiasts will get their last chances to visit Tonganoxie Water Park for the season. Tonganoxie Water Park is open Labor Day Weekend, but its final day of the season is Monday. The water park again will open up in May 2019.
Tonganoxie City Council meeting moved to Tuesday

The Tonganoxie City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday for its first meeting of the month. The governing body normally meets the first and third Monday of each month, but Monday’s meeting was moved to Tuesday because of the Labor Day holiday.
Several offices to be closed for Labor Day observance

Most government offices, many banks and some other businesses will be closed Monday in honor of Labor Day.
Tonganoxie High School car show coming in late September

The second annual Tonganoxie Car Show will be Sept. 29 at Tonganoxie High School, 300 U.S. Highway 24-40 in Tonganoxie. Registration will start at 8 a.m. for this year’s show and run until 10:30 a.m. Entry price is $15 the day of the event. Cost of registration for students is $10 and cost for adult participants who pre-register is $12. Flower power in Tonganoxie: Sunflower Stroll rolls into town this week

There are some rainy days in this week’s forecast, but organizers of this year’s Tonganoxie Sunflower Stroll are hoping the clouds won’t keep away visitors to the area celebrating the return of Grinter Farms sunflowers between Tonganoxie and Lawrence just off U.S. Highway 24-40. The extremely dry summer has led to some strange growing patterns for area sunflowers. Ted and Kris Grinter have welcomed visitors to their famous sunflower field for years and again will do so this year, but the field will bloom in sections, with the first blooms expected this weekend.
Tonganoxie High cross country opens Saturday against Lansing

The Tonganoxie High girls cross country team lost a strong senior class, but nine freshman have joined the squad. On the boys side, Chandler Hamman was the lone varsity runner lost to graduation from last year’s regional champion team. The squad will begin the season at 9 a.m. Saturday in Lansing.
Tonganoxie girls golf get season under way Thursday

The Tonganoxie High girls golf team now will have some experience when hitting the links this year. This year’s roster has seniors Savannah Adams, Adriana Dale, Laura Heskett and Brenn Shryock. Junior is Peyton Lynn and sophomores are Meghan Heskett, Cora Lanza, Kylie Rickard, Meghan Agnew, Morgan Brusven and Theona Vaughn.
Spring Hill, Sumner Academy come to town Thursday for first Tonganoxie High volleyball matches of season

Chrissie Jeannin will start her second season as coach of the Tonganoxie High volleyball team with a home match Thursday against Spring Hill and Sumner Academy. THS will look to improve on last years’ 14-19 record. Gone from last year’s squad are outside hitter Lauren Willson, who now is playing volleyball at Hutchinson Community College, outside hitter Cami Timm, who now is on the track team at Neosho County Community College and libero Makenzie Sample, who is playing softball at Fort Scott Community College. Seniors this year are middle hitter Corinn Searcy, setter Grace Wogomon and middle hitter Tahylor Knipp.
Tonganoxie High football to open season on road against longtime foe Basehor-Linwood

Tonganoxie football is coming off a monumental year. A 9-0 regular season — Tonganoxie’s first in decades — highlighted a Kaw Valley League championship and a playoff berth for the Chieftains. THS went 9-1 last season with a senior-heavy roster.
Tonganoxie High soccer home opener Tuesday against Atchison

Tonganoxie High used two second-half goals from Desi Wagner to erase a 2-0 deficit before eventually settling for a tie Friday against Kansas City Christian in Olathe. THS (0-0-1) started its season with a draw at Olathe District Athletic Complex. Saves from goalie Wyatt Martin helped keep the Panthers from getting the victory. Tonganoxie won’t be back in action until Sept. 4 when THS has its home opener against Atchison.
