Face to Face: Tonganoxie Assistant City Manager Dan Porter

January 4, 2018

Name: Dan Porter

Born: Emporia

Family: Porter married his wife, Alley, in August. They have a dog, Harper. He also has two younger sisters: Katie, a nurse who lives near Whiting with her husband and her 1-year old son; and Kelsey, a graduate student at Emporia State University pursuing a degree in biology.

Occupation: Assistant city manager, city of Tonganoxie. His office is located in City Hall and he is responsible for several administrative roles, including finance, human resources, procurement, records management, and communications. With this variety of subjects the only guarantee is that he will be doing at least one new thing every day.

“For me, the most rewarding part of working in public service is the opportunity to provide amenities and resources for the entire community to enjoy, as well as helping to build or improve my surroundings in a way that will produce a lasting impact,” he said.

Dream job as a child: Game warden (his father’s job)

Interesting fact: Porter is ambidextrous and was a tennis state champion in high school.

Digging deeper: He graduated high school in Independence, Kan., and completed a bachelor’s in economics at Benedictine College in 2013. While in college he worked as a park ranger and tennis lesson instructor. Porter met his wife while completing a master’s of public administration degree at the University of Kansas, an experience that confirmed his passion for public service and established Porter as a lifelong KU basketball fan.

The first years of his career were spent working for the cities of San Antonio and Sugar Land in Texas. Most recently he worked for the budget office at the city of Olathe. In early December, he started as Tonganoxie’s assistant city manager.

“I am excited for this opportunity and have thoroughly enjoyed my first couple weeks on the job,” Porter said. “I have already had the chance to meet many welcoming people across the community and I look forward to building relationships with others.

“The staff at the city of Tonganoxie are an excellent team who strive on a daily basis to provide essential services according to the policy direction provided by the City Council. My focus is to add my contribution to this effort to help make Tonganoxie an amazing community.”

In his spare time, Porter enjoys playing tennis, fishing, hunting and spending time with friends and family.
