Summer getaway’ for rural Tonganoxie resident on research trip to Antarctica

The winter solstice was Dec. 21, marking the start of winter and the shortest day and longest night of the year. For Emily Arnold, the next day basically was the longest of her life. The rural Tonganoxie resident, an assistant professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Kansas, was coming back from a month-long research visit to Antarctica. At first glance, it might appear to be the opposite. She left New Zealand at 11 a.m. Dec. 22 and got home about 8 p.m. that day.
Tonganoxie wrestlers take sixth at De Soto Duals tournament

Tonganoxie High placed sixth out of 10 teams Saturday at the De Soto Duals tournament. In pool play, THS opened against Lansing. The Lions won, 65-18, but THS bounced back in its next round. The Chieftains earned a tiebreaker victory after a 36-36 tie. The Chieftains then were on the losing end of a tiebreaker against Shawnee Mission North. The Indians won via tiebreaker after a 30-30 match.
Tonganoxie basketball teams earn wins at home tourney as Eudora wins 5th straight title

The Tonganoxie High boys were gaining momentum in their home tournament after nearly knocking off a state-ranked team and then routing another in the consolation bracket. On Saturday, though, the Chieftains couldn’t overcome a slow start against Metro Academy in the fifth-place game. Tonganoxie battled back in the third quarter after trailing, 28-15, at halftime, but Metro eventually took control again and won, 55-40.

Local students have been named to the fall 2017 honors list at Cloud County Community College. Jeremy Ragsdale of Tonganoxie and Joradn Blackwood and Mason Hays, both of Basehor, are on the list. To be named to the honors list, students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours of college coursework and earned a semester grade-point average of 3.6-3.899.

Chamber of Commerce Secretary Connie Torneden was selected “Member of the Year” at the chamber’s installation ceremony. In addition to her responsibilities as chamber secretary, Torneden has been the organizational hub of Tonganoxie Days since its inception eight years ago.
