The McLouth Kiwanis Club is sponsoring this year’s McLouth Easter Egg Hunt, which will start at 10 a.m. March 31 at Stan Braksick Sports Complex. Other events coming up in McLouth are the Patriots Parade on April 21, McLouth BBQ Contest on June 2 and a fireworks display on July 4.

The city of Linwood is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday. This year’s hunt is open to youths 0-12 years of age. The hunt will begin at 1 p.m. at the city park. The Easter Bunny will be available. Make sure to bring a basket for the hunt!
Basehor Beat: Baker named new principal at Basehor Intermediate; Garden plots available

The USD 458 Board of Education approved Garold Baker as principal at Basehor Intermediate School for the 2018-19 school year at the board’s February meeting, according to the district website. Baker will become the building’s instructional leader after holding the assistant principal/athletic director role at BLMS for the last three years. He will take over for Mrs. Teri Boyd, who has been with the District for 17 years, and is retiring at the end of the school year.

St. Patrick may have driven the snakes out of Ireland, but the country’s patron saint wasn’t able to drive away the cold from Saturday’s parade in Tonganoxie. Hundreds of Tonganoxie residents dressed in their winter coats — some even wrapped in blankets — braved the 35-degree temperatures to watch the parade.
Tonganoxie City Council approves bonds to fund new library

The Tonganoxie City Council approved the sale of bonds that will fund the new library project. Members voted, 3-0, to approve the sale to Commerce Bank. The sale of $3.85 million in bonds will mostly go to the library project, with roughly a $100,000 earmarked to cover issuance and underwriter costs. The bond issuance is for 20 years. The bonds went up for sale at 9 a.m. Monday.
Speakers visit Tonganoxie Business Association meetings; members attend We Kan! Conference

Tonganoxie Business Association has been busy with various events and activities. The organization, which meets at 8 a.m. Fridays at Brothers Market, just finished up with one of its annual events, the St. Patrick’s Parade. The event drew many floats on what turned out to be a nice day weather-wise.

Lulu Stevens hopes Ryan’s Public House takes third place in people’s hearts. No, that’s not third place as in the third-best choice or option. It’s a concept in larger cities in which maybe there’s a pub on one corner and a grocery store on another. It’s the concept that home is first place and work is second place. The third place offers an escape from those other places and a way for civic engagement.

Local residents are invited to join for lunch and discussion about a proposed development for a luxury RV resort. Hoefer Wysocki Architecture, along with Red Circle Development, is offering a community conversation about the proposed commercial and resort development in Tonganoxie.
Tonganoxie High players make all-KVL basketball lists

Tonganoxie had two players make the all-Kaw Valley League basketball teams this year. Morgan Brusven was honorable mention for the girls team and Mac Thompson honorable mention for the boys team. The girls finished the season 5-16, while the boys went 4-17. It was the final basketball season for the Kaw Valley League. Tonganoxie, Piper and Bonner Springs all will compete in the Frontier League, while several other KVL teams will join a new conference with Leavenworth and other area schools.

Tonganoxie High had several wrestlers make the final all-Kaw Valley League team. First-team selections were Aiden McClellan (126), Korbin Riedel (138) and Caden Searcy (160). Second-team selections were Gad Huseman (152) and Connor Searcy (195). Honorable mention were Hunter Harris (113), Patterson Starcher (145), Justin Hand (170), Devin Duncan (182) and Brent Caray (220).

Tonganoxie High’s Gad Huseman had one more opportunity to compete as a high school wrestler last week at Kansas City Kansas Community College. The senior participated March 6 in the Blue Chip Metro Classic at KCKCC.
Tonganoxie High girls soccer falls to Louisburg in season opener; other teams to start season next week

Tonganoxie and McLouth teams got the spring season started with the first practices of the year Feb. 26. Slowly but surely, those teams are playing their season openers. The Tonganoxie High girls soccer team opened the season Thursday with a road contest at future Pioneer League foe Louisburg.
