Humanities Kansas awards Tonganoxie Community Historical Society with grant

Humanities Kansas recently awarded $4,830 to the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society in support of “The Spring at the Fairchild Farm.” Joy Lominska serves as project director. The grant allows for research into the history of the spring on the museum grounds and will result in an outdoor display with signage about the spring and how such springs have supported life and spurred development. A grand opening is planned for April 2020.
Tonganoxie High celebrates 2019 prom at Kansas Union Ballroom

Tonganoxie High School celebrated its prom with festivities April 6 in Lawrence. Many students took outdoor photos and gathered in various groups for dinner at area restaurants before venturing off to the prom, which again took place at the Kansas Union Ballroom on the University of Kansas campus. Mark Greathouse Photography captured photos of the event and then students danced the night away. Prom royalty this year were Adam DeMaranville and Bailey Bradley. When prom finished up in Lawrence, students came back to Tonganoxie to celebrate After Prom festivities at the THS west campus gymnasium into the early hours of the next morning.
Easter egg hunts, Egg My Yard fundraiser planned for Tonganoxie

Cornerstone Family Worship will have its EGGstravaganza event next week. Festivities will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Family Worship, across from the Tonganoxie High School west campus ball fields on U.S. Highway 24-40.
Documentary about ‘riverkings’ to be featured Tuesday in Tonganoxie

A documentary about “riverkings” along the Kansas River will be shown Tuesday as part of the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society’s Fourth Tuesday programming. The documentary “When Kings Reigned,” which was produced in Lawrence, will be show at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Tonganoxie Community Historic Site, 210 W. Washington St. The film begins with Jake Washington (a runaway slave) arriving in Lawrence just before the end of the Civil War. He sets up shop, building a fishing cabin on the banks of the Kaw River in Lawrence and is actively working the waters by 1870. The timeline of the riverkings runs from 1870-1970.
Tonganoxie soccer ties Atchison

Tonganoxie High soccer moved to 1-7-1 after Monday’s tie against Atchison at the Chieftain Park Sporst Complex. THS had a 4-0 lead in the match, but Atchison eventually tied it and the teams finished in a tie after overtime play. THS is on the road Thursday at Piper and back home Tuesday against Heritage Christian.
Tonganoxie softball routs Louisburg

Tonganoxie High softball evened its record at 4-4 after Thursday’s 18-5 victory against Louisburg. THS also won the second game of a doubleheader April 9 against Paola, 7-4. THS was 4-4 overall and 2-4 in Frontier League play heading into Tuesday’s doubleheader at Bonner Springs. THS is back home Thursday agaisnt Spring Hill and then on the road Tuesday at Baldwin.

Two teams competed Saturday night in the match to see who would be crowned the champion of the Improv Thunderdome and earn a cash prize. One team included Garrett Kelly, a Kansas University junior and a 2006 Tonganoxie High School graduate, along with five other KU students. The other team included Benjamin Brest, a KU student and a 2004 Tonganoxie High School graduate, along with three other KU students. Benjamin Brest’s group won first place – Garrett Kelly’s group won second place.
