Tremendous trainer: Tonganoxie High’s Padfield wins 1 award, set to receive another

Tonganoxie High School athletic trainer Mark Padfield recently received a statewide award and is set to receive a regional award in March. Padfield won the 2018 Kansas Athletic Trainers’ Society Athletic Trainer of the Year award this past November during the 12th annual KATS Symposium. Padfield, who serves a teacher at THS, also works for Lawrence Memorial Hospital as the athletic trainer assigned to the school. He is also a medical spotter for the NFL.
A closer look at the latest Quilts of Valor in Tonganoxie

Local quilters created four quilts that earned the status of being Quilts of Valor. The quilts were dedicated and presented during Tonganoxie USD 464’s inaugural Veterans Day Program at the Tonganoxie High School performing Arts Center. Receiving the quilts were Jerry Jarrett and Elmer Tanking, along with the families of the late Lucas Frantz and Larry Meadows.
Tonganoxie High School student killed in KCK double shooting; classmate in critical condition

A Tonganoxie High School student was killed and another injured in a double shooting Monday night in Kansas City, Kan. Kansas City Kansas Police identified the victim as Bradley J. Samsel, 18, Tonganoxie. He was a senior at THS. The second person shot in the incident, also a senior at THS, was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. She remains in critical condition, according to KCK police.
Tonganoxie High boys rally falls short against Ottawa

Drake Pray set the tone for Tonganoxie early in the Chieftains’ Frontier League game against Ottawa at THS. Pray picked off an Ottawa pass and took it the other way for a layup and the first points of the game. By the time the first quarter ended, Pray had seven of Tonganoxie’s points and the Chieftains were up, 15-13, entering the second quarter. After the hot start, though, Ottawa responded with a 22-6 advantage in the second quarter. Tonganoxie pecked away at the deficit, but Ottawa eventually escaped with a 55-49 victory in the first game of 2019 for both teams.

The past few days likely will be sticking in Drew Williams’ mind for decades to come. The Tonganoxie High girls coach was preparing for Friday’s home game against Ottawa, which also was the first game of the new year. While game planning Thursday and Friday, Williams also was substitute teacher planning — wife, Lauren, could have her baby any day.
Tonganoxie USD 464 school board meets with architects regarding future bond issue; turf interviews todays

The Tonganoxie USD 464 school board met Monday for a special meeting for interviews with architectural firms as the district pursues a bond issue for improvements to the high school. The board interviewed both DLR and HTK as prospective architectural firms for the future high school bond issue. Board members again will meet at 6 p.m. tonight for another special meeting again at the Tonganoxie Elementary School library. This meeting will be to interview and review bids from three turf companies for potential artificial turf at Beatty Field.
Tonganoxie City Council approves business park landscape, Stone Creek addition and League of Kansas Municipalities agreements

The Tonganoxie City Council approved a landscape design agreement with GBA Architects for Tonganoxie Business Park. The agreement, approved by a 4-0 vote, with Curtis Oroke absent, will allow for several key factors, according to city staff, that will enhance the landscape design of the business park, including landscape architecture, irrigation, wetlands beautification and entrance monument signage.2
