Family, friends and even strangers help clean up after Linwood tornado demolishes dairy

Lawrence firefighter Rob Leach spoke into a portable radio microphone, giving instructions to a group of volunteers to move from the pasture to a cornfield as they picked up debris Saturday morning at Lin-Crest Farm. “My fire department training has come in handy,” he said. Rob’s family dairy farm, 3 miles north of Linwood, was demolished on May 28 by the EF-4 tornado that cut a 32-mile path of destruction through Douglas County and Leavenworth counties. Eleven days after the life-changing storm, Rob and his wife, Lisa, coordinated Saturday’s cleanup, with the help of about 100 volunteers, including folks from the show-cattle circuit, colleagues from work, 4-H club members and even strangers.
Turf project on schedule at Tonganoxie High’s Beatty Field; personnel recommendations approved

Though rain halted progress on the turf project in recent weeks, better construction weather has helped the field turf project at Beatty Field. Superintendent Loren Feldkamp said the project should be back on schedule for completion at the end of July or early August. He said a layer of rock likely will be the next step for the project, likely later this week.
Tonganoxie couple to compete Saturday at Monster Jam in Arrowhead Stadium

A seasoned Tonganoxie husband and wife who are big stars in the monster truck circuit will be competing in their own back yard this weekend. Jimmy and Dawn Creten, known as drivers of monster trucks Bounty Hunter and Scarlet Bandit, will be operating their giant trucks Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium.
Hometown All-American: THS alum Ben Johnson earns national recognition at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Tonganoxie High alum Ben Johnson has finished a decorated track career Wichita State as the fourth NCAA All-American decathlete in school history. Johnson finished 14th in the decathlon to earn second team All-American honors Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas. Johnson finished the decathlon in 14th place with 7,329 points, earning second team All-American honors at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus. Johnson opened the day with the 110-meter hurdles and ended with the 1,500 meters about 10 hours later.
