Cards deal Tonganoxie High softball regional loss

A downpour kept Tonganoxie High softball off the field Thursday for about 90 minutes after the team’s original start time for a Class 4A regional game in Lawrence. No. 14 THS was supposed to play No. 3 Eudora earlier in the week at Eudora, but inclement weather and the threat of more rain moved the game to Lawrence High, which has artificial turf.

Tonganoxie High was known for scoring runs on the baseball diamond this spring. The Chieftains scored 10 or more runs nine times this season. That number jumped to 14 games in which THS scored seven or more. But in a Class 4A regional May 18 in Atchison, the Chieftains weren’t able to generate quite the offensive firepower.

Tonganoxie will be sending eight track members to the Class 4A State Track and Field Championships in 12 events later this week in Wichita. The THS boys team will have five qualifiers in eight events at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium, while the girls team has three qualifiers in four events. The Chieftains earned individual state berths Friday at a Class 4A regional at Beatty Field.
Craft show applications to be sent out next week

After a year’s absence due to COVID-19 precautions, the Basehor Craft Show will return later this year.
History camp for youths starts June 7 at historic site in Tonganoxie

Tonganoxie Community Historic Site will be the venue for the historical society’s history camp: Who Lived Here Before Us? The camp, open to youths entering grades 4-6 in the fall, will be 9 a.m.-noon June 7-11 at the site and museum, 201 W. Washington St.
Free summer food program returning to Tonganoxie

Youths will be able to eat for free again this summer through the Tonganoxie USD 464 Food Service Program. Curbside grab-and-go meal kits will be available 10:45-11:45 a.m. on Wednesdays starting next week on Wednesday, June 2, and finishing up July 28.
Memorial Day services planned for Tonganoxie

American Legion Post 41 will be putting out flags at Tonganoxie cemeteries in advance of a Memorial Day ceremony Monday.
Filing deadline is Tuesday for Tonganoxie city, school board races

The filing deadline for Tonganoxie City Council and Tonganoxie USD 464 school board candidates is less than a week away. The deadline to file for candidates is noon Tuesday. Terms are expiring for three seats on each governing body, with some candidates already filed in the school board race.
