Food service program continues at Tonganoxie Elementary School for youths up to 18

Tonganoxie USD 464 Food Service again is offering free meals this summer at Tonganoxie Elementary School. The curbside grab-and-go program is open to youths ages 1-18 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Monday pickups consist of two breakfasts and two lunches per youth, while Wednesday is three breakfasts and three lunches per student.

The Tongie Tidal Waves opened the home season with a scorcher of a morning Friday at Tonganoxie Water Park. The Tidal Waves, though beat the heat and turned in some strong performances against Lansing. Tonganoxie scored 609 points to Lansing’s 738.
Leavenworth honors Juneteenth

A remembrance of those who were lynched in Leavenworth took place Saturday afternoon at Bob Dougherty Park, Second and Kiowa streets in Leavenworth. The Equal Justice Initiative, EJI.org, has worked nationally to remember those who have been lynched. In their work, they ask communities where lynchings have occurred to do a soil collection. This soil will be placed in a glass jar and sent to their museum in Montgomery, Ala. Further, a collection of soil will remain in Leavenworth at the Richard Allen Cultural Center. Tracks repaired, but cleanup continues at site of coal train derailment north of Lawrence

Trains are running again on tracks that had been seriously damaged Friday when a coal train derailed north of Lawrence. The Union Pacific tracks were repaired over the weekend, and railroad crews with excavators continued to clean up coal and wreckage along the rail line.
Kansas City, Kan., teen sentenced to life in prison in death of 12-year-old boy

A Kansas City, Kan., teenager has been sentenced to life in prison in the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy during a botched gun deal. WDAF-TV reports that a jury convicted 18-year-old Jaylen LaRon Johnson of Kansas City, Kan., of first-degree murder last month.
