Tonganoxie USD 464 voters say no to budget authority increase

The Tonganoxie USD 464 school board will not have an increased local-option budget authority. With about a 39 percent voter turnout, 1,235 people voted against the measure, while 1,055 voted in favor of it, a margin of 180 votes. The “no” votes had about 54 percent of the vote.

Tonganoxie voters have about two weeks left to cast their mail-in ballots in the special Tonganoxie USD 464 local option budget election. Voters will decide whether to give the school board authority to increase the local option budget from 30 percent to 33 percent. Ballots were sent out last week and are due back to the Leavenworth County Courthouse by noon June 30.

About 10 Tonganoxie area residents gathered at a local residence Friday night to discuss politics. The discussion centered at times on what’s happening in Topeka, but the focus for this group was and continues to be hyperlocal — the state of school funding.

I would like to start by saying that I have supported increased education funding at every opportunity since I first was elected in 2008. Last April, I supported the bill that put an additional $126.2 million into schools statewide for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2014.

The Tonganoxie USD 464 School Board will have a much different look in a few months. Voters last week voted in three challengers in races that involved incumbents, while a fourth seat was a battle between two candidates who were not incumbents.
