Tonganoxie USD 464 addresses cyberbullying at meeting

Tonganoxie USD 464 took the proper steps, per its policies involving cyberbullying, in a case in which one student shared a photo of another, according to Superintendent Lyn Rantz. The superintendent also apologized for comments she made to a Kansas City, Mo., television station about the situation, and said that the comments did not reflect her entire email to the station about the incident.
Tonganoxie Grandparents Day festivities draw huge crowds again

The grandparents outnumbered the grandchildren Friday at Tonganoxie Elementary School. Enrollment at the school is 838 students for grades kindergarten through fifth, but some 854 family members visited for the annual Grandparents Day festivities. Cars were parked everywhere as grandparents visited students at both Tonganoxie Middle School and Tonganoxie Elementary School.

Summer traditionally has been the time of year when athletes knock off the rust with weeklong camps for varying sports. It’s not the only activity in Tonganoxie with such a history. It’s been something longtime Tonganoxie High School band director Charles Van Middlesworth has done with his students with an annual band camp in the summer. This year’s camp took place the Aug. 10-14 on the THS football practice field.

It’s been a few years in the making, but the new, state-of-the-art Tonganoxie Elementary School — thought to be the largest in the state — is ready to be the new home for early education. The school, at 1180 S. East St., will have roughly 850 students in kindergarten through fifth grade with room to grow.

Flamingos generally aren’t seen in these parts, but a flock of them — of the plastic variety — have been migrating from neighborhood to neighborhood in Tonganoxie. Team Tongie is “flocking” yards as a fundraiser throughout August. The process is simple.

U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins knows all too well the world of sports injuries. The Republican legislator said she’s spent some quality time in hospitals with her son, Hayden Jenkins, who has suffered multiple concussion injuries on the football field. Hayden Jenkins continues to play football at Baker University and, like any parent, Jenkins worries about her son’s safety on the playing field.

Tonganoxie USD 464 Superintendent Lyn Rantz has said that early enrollment shows several new students are enrolled in the district. With the state’s new block funding, the district won’t receive additional state aid for those students, as was the case with the previous state aid formula.
