This past weekend was the 15th annual Madrigal Feaste, an event that continues to draw sellout performances for two nights only. It also serves as a reunion.

The Tonganoxie vocal music department will be welcoming noble lords and ladies to its “castle” Friday and Saturday in the Tonganoxie Middle School commons area. It’s time for the 13th annual Madrigal Feaste, as students entertain guests with music while a meal of wasseyle coppes, potage and farthing weight weate loaf, wilde board, streng bene and rosta botata and royal fruit tartes will be served.
Tonganoxie High graduate finalist for K-State entrepreneuership contest

A Tonganoxie High School graduate is part of one of 10 finalist teams in the 2016 Kansas State University Launch competition. The Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship has selected 10 student business venture ideas as finalists. Tyler O’Briant, Tonganoxie, and Sam Rozell, Manhattan, both seniors in electrical engineering, pitched the idea of Eyas, which will provide the first advanced police support quadcopter drone on the market.

Sidney Murphy didn’t have to do much searching for her next step after Tonganoxie High School. The THS senior, who is a member of the cheer squad, signed a national letter of intent last week to cheer at Neosho County Community College in Chanute. “I had a friend that went there,” Murphy explained. “The coach had contacted me about coming down for a visit… I really liked their campus. It was small like Tonganoxie.
Tonganoxie teachers, USD 464 board still looking at contracts

A contract agreement for teachers in Tonganoxie USD 464 continues to be up in the air. More than 50 people — mostly district teachers — attended Monday’s regular school board meeting to voice concerns about the current proposal. Both the board and district teachers are working to come to an agreement over the contract.

The Tonganoxie High School drama and music departments will be presenting “The Drowsy Chaperone: The Musical within a Comedy” later this week. Shows are 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Tonganoxie Performing Arts Center on the THS campus. Cost is $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and students, $5 for anyone ages 10 and younger.

Jenkins visits Tonganoxie High School to chat with juniors, seniors about DC

Longtime Tonganoxie High School teacher Andy Gilner has offered a unique extra credit to his students for more than 20 years. The American government instructor has encouraged students to write to their U.S. senators and representatives inviting them to visit THS and tell the senior class about their work in Washington, D.C. Lynn Jenkins, R-Topeka, has visited in the past and did so again last week. Jenkins, the current representative for Kansas’ 2nd District, spoke to both juniors and seniors at the Tonganoxie Performing Arts Center. School officials stressed to Jenkins that the discussion with students should be educational and not a campaign visit. Jenkins will face Democratic challenger Britani Potter, an Ottawa school board member, next month in the general election.
Tonganoxie USD 464 board picks new member; FTE enrollment up; library building discussed; contracts, resignations approved

Tonganoxie USD 464 has a new board member. Phillip Welsh, a local engineer, was selected by a unanimous 5-0 vote at Monday’s meeting. Amelia Brusven was absent. The board interviewed Welsh during the regular meeting, while another applicant, Doug Regehr, interviewed with the board through video chat.
