It was another season of state medals for the Tonganoxie High wrestling team. THS landed three medals at Saturday’s Class 4A state tournament, equaling its school-record best set in 2013 and tied in 2014.

On senior night, it’s common for seniors to be too jacked up, or be nervous enough to where it affects their play to start the game. For seniors Tyler Novotney and Dylan Staaz, that certainly wasn’t the case. The senior duo combined for the first eight Tonganoxie points, and Novotney hit five three-pointers and scored 16 points in the first half alone in the Tonganoxie Chieftains wire-to-wire 56-34 win against the Bishop Ward Cyclones. The win improved the Chieftains to 4-16 on the season.

With time winding down in the third quarter, junior Taylor Lee had to rush a three-point attempt to get it off before the buzzer. The shot was nothing but net, and Lee, who looked over to her bench in shock, was perhaps the only person in the gym surprised the shot went in.
THS football standout Trimble signs with Fort Scott Community College

It hasn’t been the smoothest of high school sports careers for Tonganoxie High senior Dalton Trimble. Athletes will have their bumps and bruises, but Trimble endured five injuries that sidelined him during various seasons.

The Tonganoxie High wrestling squad didn’t nab a gold medal Saturday at the Kaw Valley League meet at Bonner Springs, but the Chieftains medaled eight wrestlers at final tuneup before regionals.
THS boys roar back against Lansing, but Lions too much in second half

Just three minutes and 30 seconds into the game, it seemed like it was going to be a long night for the visiting Tonganoxie Chieftains. The Lansing Lions hit five of their first six three-pointers, and before the Chieftains could even blink, they found themselves in a 19-0 hole.

With about 4:30 remaining in the third quarter and the Tonganoxie High girls basketball team down 43-15, it didn’t seem like things could get much worse. But after the Lansing Lions threw up an air ball from beyond the arc, the shot deflected off Chieftain junior Mackenzie Price and went straight into the basket.`
McLouth teams can’t crack win column during busy week

McLouth High basketball teams had a busy week this past week, playing three games in four days. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, both teams went winless during the busy stretch.

The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team found itself in an enjoyable place last week: the win column. The THS girls defeated Heritage Christian, 57-34, Jan. 26 at the THS gymnasium. The squad followed up with a big victory Friday in Kansas City, Kan. Tonganoxie defeated Bishop Ward, 63-42, on the road and improved to 3-9 with the two-game winning streak.

The Tonganoxie High boys won another nail-biter and then nabbed its first road victory last week. After starting 0-9, the team has won three of its last four games. THS defeated Heritage Christian, 32-30, Jan. 26 at home and then defeated Bishop Ward, 47-38, on Friday in Kansas City, Kan. The Chieftains were in a tight game all night against Heritage Christian. Tonganoxie had the largest lead at five points early (10-5). The game also saw four lead changes and six ties. Both teams also had similar runs, with THS’ longest being 11-3 and Heritage Christian’s 11-2.

Tonganoxie High had arguably its best showing of the wrestling season Saturday at the Baldwin Invitational Tournament. The Chieftains finished fourth out of 16 teams, finishing behind a trio of ranked teams in Class 4A. Goodland, ranked No. 7 in 4A, won the meet with 216 points, while Santa Fe Trail, ranked No. 2, finished second with 172.5. No. 6 Baldwin took third with 159. THS wasn’t far behind at 146.5.

Eudora outlasts THS girls in tournament consolation game

Senior Kaitlin Hall nailed a deep three to bring Tonganoxie within one possession at 40-37. But Eudora senior LeAnne Anderson scored two of her eight points on her next trip to the free throw line, which effectively sealed the Tonganoxie Chieftains fate in a 45-37 loss to the Eudora Cardinals in the first game in the consolation bracket of the Tonganoxie Basketball Invitational.
