Tonganoxie HIgh teammates sign to play volleyball on collegiate level

Tonganoxie High teammates Kassi Gratton and Lauren Jackson have accepted opportunities to continue their volleyball careers at the collegiate level, but they have selected considerably different options. Gratton is heading to Great Bend, about 220 miles from Tonganoxie, to play at Barton County Community College. A more than 3-hour drive is a bit of a jaunt, but Jackson will be playing some 600 miles away in Richmond, Ind.

Midway through the second quarter, things looked bleak for the Tonganoxie High girls basketball team. Behind an offensive rebounding onslaught, Atchison opened up a 39-15 lead midway through the second quarter. “The way our team has been all year is if we play a half court game, we have a tough time because we don’t rebound well,” head coach Matt Frost said.

The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team was in great shape after a quarter of basketball Friday in a Class 4A Division I basketball game against Atchison. It was the next two quarters that doomed the squad and kept it from making an upset bid in the postseason. THS, the No. 4 seed in the bracket, trailed top-seeded Atchison, 11-8, after the first quarter.

With time winding down in the third quarter, junior Taylor Lee had to rush a three-point attempt to get it off before the buzzer. The shot was nothing but net, and Lee, who looked over to her bench in shock, was perhaps the only person in the gym surprised the shot went in. Lee went 6-of-7 from beyond the arc, and in the process, broke senior Kaitlin Hall’s school record for three-pointers made in a game (five), which she set Thursday night against Kansas City Wyandotte.

It was another season of state medals for the Tonganoxie High wrestling team. THS landed three medals at Saturday’s Class 4A state tournament, equaling its school-record best set in 2013 and tied in 2014.

On senior night, it’s common for seniors to be too jacked up, or be nervous enough to where it affects their play to start the game. For seniors Tyler Novotney and Dylan Staaz, that certainly wasn’t the case. The senior duo combined for the first eight Tonganoxie points, and Novotney hit five three-pointers and scored 16 points in the first half alone in the Tonganoxie Chieftains wire-to-wire 56-34 win against the Bishop Ward Cyclones. The win improved the Chieftains to 4-16 on the season.

It hasn’t been the smoothest of high school sports careers for Tonganoxie High senior Dalton Trimble. Athletes will have their bumps and bruises, but Trimble endured five injuries that sidelined him during various seasons.

Just three minutes and 30 seconds into the game, it seemed like it was going to be a long night for the visiting Tonganoxie Chieftains. The Lansing Lions hit five of their first six three-pointers, and before the Chieftains could even blink, they found themselves in a 19-0 hole.

But after the Lansing Lions threw up an air ball from beyond the arc, the shot deflected off Chieftain junior Mackenzie Price and went straight into the basket.`

Tonganoxie High girls roll past foes for back-to-back victories

The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team found itself in an enjoyable place last week: the win column. The THS girls defeated Heritage Christian, 57-34, Jan. 26 at the THS gymnasium. The squad followed up with a big victory Friday in Kansas City, Kan. Tonganoxie defeated Bishop Ward, 63-42, on the road and improved to 3-9 with the two-game winning streak.
