The Tonganoxie Chieftains were circled around their coaching staff on the field as each coach addressed the team. When defensive coordinator Matt Bond finally made his way down to the circle from the press box, he had just one thing to say to his team.
Tonganoxie High athletics sweeps competitions for the week

It was a good week for Tonganoxie High athletics. All of its varsity squads swept competitions last week. The THS soccer team got back on track with a 9-0 victory Sept. 6 and then 3-2 on Thursday against Bishop Ward. Those victories improved the squad to 3-1 on the season.
OVERTIME THRILLER: Tonganoxie football outlasts Eudora, 46-40

Zac Morgan’s 154 total yards on offense, three touchdowns and a 78-yard punt return touchdown led Tonganoxie to a 46-40 overtime win over Eudora. After Eudora (1-1) fumbled on the first play of overtime, Mason Beach threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Caden Searcy to win the game for Tonganoxie.
Tonganoxie High cross country competes well against Lansing

Tonganoxie opened the cross country season last week with a dual on the road against Lansing. The THS boys nearly had a victory, scoring 29 to Lansing’s low score of 27. The Lions also won the girls meet with 21 points to the Chieftains’ 35. In the boys race, Tonganoxie’s Drew Cook took first with a time of 18 minutes, 5 seconds. Carter Kietzmann placed second in 18:50 and Calvin Morgan sixth with 19:43 time. Jakob Foley placed ninth (20:08) and Chandler Hamman 11th (20:24).

It’s not uncommon for teams at the high school, college and even at professional level to have a moment in their season where nothing is going well. That moment is right now for the Tonganoxie High boys soccer team. Tonganoxie was hit in the mouth Thursday at Basehor-Linwood and defeated by a sound score of 6-0. The match was decided very quickly. In fact, Basehor-Linwood scored its first goal in the first 30 seconds of the game and its second goal came just 45 seconds later.

After the Tonganoxie High volleyball team lost the third set of its best-of-five match to Eudora on Thursday, THS coach Tiffany Parker wasn’t sure how her team would respond in the fourth set. Tonganoxie lost a lot of the momentum it gained in taking a 2-0 set lead, but more importantly, the team would have to fight through fatigue after a tough match with Lansing just two days earlier.

What a difference a year makes. Last year, the Tonganoxie Chieftains would have been the team to make the costly mistakes. But this year, they are a veteran football team that has learned from past miscues. That experience paid dividends on opening night, when the Chieftains were the much more polished team.

The Tonganoxie High boys’ soccer team held a 2-0 lead over Kansas City Christian at halftime in the first round of the 2015 4-1A playoffs and it didn’t appear their season was in any immediate danger of ending. However, Kansas City Christian benefited from a no-call on their first goal and it was all down hill from there for Tonganoxie, whose season ended with a 3-2 defeat.
Tonganoxie volleyball hopes to build on state tournament appearance

The Tonganoxie High School volleyball team had one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2015. The Chieftains finished the season with a 29-14 record and a fourth pace finish in class 4A Division I. Junior Lauren Willson and senior Emily Hummelgaard both headline the returners from the 2015 team. Both players earned all-league honors last season, and they will be heavily relied on once again this season.

“Grow up,” “fought hard” and “ excited for the future” were all common phrases used by Tonganoxie head coach Al Troyer when discussing his youthful Tonganoxie High School Football team last season. The Chieftains struggled to a 3-6 record in a season full of lessons. Eight sophomores were regular starters, and more importantly, the Chieftains only lost seven seniors off last year’s team. “It’s always a progression when you’re rebuilding with a young squad,” Troyer said. “We started eight sophomores last season and they’ve matured. The outlook is good.”

Michael Phelps caught the world’s attention in Rio with an increasing personal medal count as he closed out one of the most decorated Olympic careers ever. Those discolored circles on his back also caused quite the chatter also. Phelps has been utilizing a therapy more and more athletes are using.
MIdnight run for Tonganoxie cross country spreads to other fall sports for first-practice tradition

The midnight madness is catching on in Tonganoxie. The Tonganoxie High cross country team first started the tradition of having the first practice of the new season at 12:01 a.m. on the first day Kansas high school teams can practice, per Kansas State High School Activities Association rules.
Tonganoxie High baseball players, alums help area team win state USSSA baseball tournament

Current — and recently former — Tonganoxie High baseball players have contributed to a state championship in summer competition. Dante Nelson, Dominik Novotney and Jordan Brown, who all will be seniors at THS when school starts next month, and graduates Billy Kelley and Tyler Novotney are members of the Midwest Braves team that just won the USSSA 18-and-under state championship last month.
