Tonganoxie wrestlers take sixth at De Soto Duals tournament

Tonganoxie High placed sixth out of 10 teams Saturday at the De Soto Duals tournament. In pool play, THS opened against Lansing. The Lions won, 65-18, but THS bounced back in its next round. The Chieftains earned a tiebreaker victory after a 36-36 tie. The Chieftains then were on the losing end of a tiebreaker against Shawnee Mission North. The Indians won via tiebreaker after a 30-30 match.

The Tonganoxie High boys were gaining momentum in their home tournament after nearly knocking off a state-ranked team and then routing another in the consolation bracket. On Saturday, though, the Chieftains couldn’t overcome a slow start against Metro Academy in the fifth-place game. Tonganoxie battled back in the third quarter after trailing, 28-15, at halftime, but Metro eventually took control again and won, 55-40.

The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team got a resounding victory at its home tournament Thursday, while the THS girls bounced back from a rough first game Tuesday and nearly knocked off Wamego in the second round. Tbe THS boys shot nearly 53 percent from the field and cruised to a 63-36 victory against Holton in the consolation bracket.
Tonganoxie Invitational’s 59th installment starts today

The 59th annual Tonganoxie Invitational begins today with the boys bracket. Eudora plays Metro Academy at 4 p.m. and then De Soto and Holton take the court at 5:30 p.m. Tonganoxie faces Wamego in the final game of the day. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Tonganoxie High takes a second-place finish at the Randy Starcher Memorial Dual Wrestling Tournament into winter break. THS went 4-1 on the day, as the Chieftains opened with a 66-18 victory against Frontenac. Tonganoxie then defeated Eudora, 60-24, before winning, 54-24, against another Frontier League team in Louisburg.
Brothers look to lead respective teams to state footballl titles in neighboring towns

This year’s Kansas high school football state championships will have two brothers leading their respective teams to titles in separate classes. Coach Matt Heuer will look to win his second straight 8-Man Division II title Saturday when Hanover (12-0) takes on Hodgeman County (10-2) on Saturday at Newton-Fischer Field in Newton. In Class 3A, brother Dustin Heuer will lead Marysville (12-1) against Sabetha (12-1) on Saturday at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson. MHS upset previously undefeated and No. 1 Phillipsburg, 30-24, this past Friday at Phillipsburg. Sabetha defeated previously unbeaten Silver Lake, 17-14. State championship often match teams from different areas of the state, but Marysville and Sabetha are about 40 miles apart on or near U.S. Highway 36.
Late Night in Tonganoxie for winter sports

Tonganoxie High teams are ready for a new season. Tongie Late Night 2017 took place Monday at the THS gymnasium. The winter sports kickoff event gave coaches a chance to showcase boys and girls basketball, wrestling and power lifting.

Lauren Willson didn’t take much time contemplating the next step in her volleyball career. The Tonganoxie High senior signed a National Letter of Intent this last Thursday to play volleyball at Hutchinson Community College. “When I went for the campus visit, I just kind of fell in love with it,” she said. HCC also is just right in terms of distance — a three-hour drive is not too close to home, but not halfway across the country, either.
Tonganoxie High lands several on all-Kaw Valley League teams

Tonganoxie High had one of its most successful fall seasons in school history this year. THS football, soccer and cross country all were regional champs, while football and soccer also were league champions. The success translated into many individual selections for all-league teams.
De Soto dashes dreams for Tonganoxie High

The Tonganoxie High football team got off to a rough start Friday against De Soto in a Class 4A Division I regional game. After the De Soto defense forced the Chieftains to go three and out on their first possession, Zach Titus blocked a punt and the Wildcats had the ball at the Tongie 10-yard line. The Wildcats weren’t able to capitalize on the blocked punt immediately — netting 0 yards on their first two plays — but quarterback Bryce Mohl threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Darren Winans on 3rd and goal, and De Soto was off and rolling.

With Basehor-Linwood’s defense keyed in on the middle of the field, Dalton Bock knew he’d come close many times. The Tonganoxie running back had been one step from breaking through the Bobcat secondary on several carries, only to be tripped up from behind. Finally, midway through the fourth quarter, the Chieftain senior saw an opening. He split the safeties and scampered 55 yards to the end zone, putting a 55-year-old drought to rest.
Tonganoxie High soccer wins again, defeats Maranatha in overtime thriller for regional title

Surviving and advancing in the soccer postseason pushes the blood pressure with an oh-so-close goal and trims the nails with a nervous bit. Tonganoxie had one of those matches against who else — Maranatha Christian Academy — Thursday in a Class 4-1A regional at Chieftain Park. MCA pushed the Chieftains earlier this season in Shawnee. THS finally won, 4-3, in overtime that night. It would be another overtime night in Tonganoxie. The game finished with 2:12 left in overtime when Bowan Jones’ kick from 23 yards out sailed into the net. THS won the regional title, 3-2.
