Big fourth quarter sparks Tonganoxie boys in first victory of year

A big fourth quarter pushed the Tonganoxie High boys basketball team to its first victory of the season Tuesday. THS trailed Perry-Lecompton, 34-30, entering the fourth quarter, but an 18-5 fourth quarter helped Tonganoxie to a 48-39 road victory at Perry.

Louisburg outscored Tonganoxie in every quarter on the way to a 58-26 victory Friday night in the season opener for both girls basketball teams.

Tonganoxie and Louisburg played a tightly contested season opener for both teams Friday in Louisburg, but the Wildcats eventually would pull away for a 60-50 victory in what was the inaugural Frontier League game for THS and coach Phil Jones’ first as head coach of the program.

Miege wins 5th straight 4A football title

Kansas has its football state champions for 2018. Several games determined state titles Saturday across the state. Derby (13-0) won the Class 6A title with a 24-16 victory against Blue Valley North (9-4) in Emporia, while St. Thomas Aquinas won its first state title in school history with a 49-28 victory against Wichita Northwest in Pittsburg. Aquinas finished 13-0, while Northwest ended the year 12-1. The 6A game was played at Emporia State and the 5A title at Pittsburg State.
Jones leads Tonganoxie High boys basketball into new era

First-year Tonganoxie High boys basketball coach Phil Jones has been using a specific mantra this season. “New league, new coach, fresh start,” Jones said Tuesday morning. Jones has told his players they can “come in and make some noise” in the first season in the Frontier League. He has used the THS football team’s fortunes in the fall as an example.
Miege wins state soccer

Bishop Miege won this year’s Class 4-3-2-1A state boys soccer title Nov. 2 at Piper. Miege (14-5-2) defeated Buhler (16-3-2), 4-0, in the title. Kansas City Christian (11-8-2) defeated Thomas More Prep-Marian/Ellis (9-9) for third place. Olathe East (17-3-1) won the 6A title with a 3-0 victory against Manhattan (18-3) in Olathe. Shawnee Mission east (13-4-4) won third with a 2-0 shutout of Derby (15-6) in the consolation match. And in 5A, Blue Valley Southwest (16-4) blanked Maize South (17-4), 6-0 for the state title in Topeka. St. James Academy (11-9-1) won the consolation match, 2-1, in overtime against Bishop Carroll (15-6).
Bishop Miege wins 20th state title in volleyball

Kansas crowned its volleyball state champions Oct. 27. Lawrence (38-2) won the 6A title, while St. James Academy (34-8) nabbed the 5A crown.Bishop Miege won 4A (26-16) and Silver Lake won 3A (37-6). Garden Plain (35-10) took the 2A title and Centralia (47-0) finished perfect on the season and won the 1A title. Centralia won its third consecutive title and fifth out of the last six, while St. James Academy won its second straight. Miege has the most overall state titles with 20, Lawrence 16 and Centralia 15.
Piper wins state cheer championship

Piper won this year’s KSHSAA Game Day Spirit Showcase competition Saturday. The Pirates spirit squad team finished with a final score of 82.75 points. PHS won the 4A state competition finishing just ahead of Osawatomie (81). Fort Scott took third (78) and Pratt fourth (77). Bishop Miege placed sixth (75.25) and Coffeyville sixth (67.5) in the finals. Winners in other classes were Blue Valley North (6A), Shawnee Heights (5A), Cheney (3A) and Ellis (2-1A).
State football titles to be decided Saturday

State championships will be decided across the state Saturday in high school football. Blue Valley North (9-3) takes on Derby (12-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium in the Class 6A title game. In 5A, St. Thomas Aquinas (11-0) takes on Wichita Northwest (12-0) at 1 p.m. at Pittsburg State’s Carnie Smith Stadium. Bishop Miege (10-2) will try to win its fifth consecutive state title with its 4A showdown against Goddard (10-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Complex.
Sporting Kansas City playing Portland Timbers in MLS Conference Finals

Sporting Kansas City’s quest to win its first Major League Soccer Cup since 2013 continues this weekend. SKC plays Portland at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan., in the first leg of the Western Conference Finals. The Leg 2 match will be 8:30 p.m. Nov. 29 in Portland. If Sporting KC can win against Portland, the team would play Atlanta United or New York Red Bulls. The winners of the two conference final clashes will meet Dec. 8 in the MLS Cup. The team with the highest regular-season point total will host the championship match. Sporting KC is the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, while Portland is No. 2. New York is the top seed in the Eastern Conference, with Atlanta the No. 2 seed. SKC is 18-8-8 on the season. Sporting KC also won the MLS Cup in 2000 along with 2013, the Supporters’ Shield in 2000 and the U.S. Open Cup in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017.
