Tonganoxie football holds on again after big lead for 2nd victory of season

Through three quarters, the Tonganoxie High football team dominated Turner on its way to a 42-12 lead. Like week one, when the Chieftains almost blew a 24-point lead, they allowed the Bears to rally in the fourth quarter Friday, but were able to hang on for their second win of the season.

Thursday’s Tonganoxie High volleyball match against Eudora might as well have been a postseason battle. Four of the five sets were decided by the closest possible margin of two points. The fifth set, meanwhile, was decided by just four.
Tonganoxie High cross country boys win dual against Lansing

Tonganoxie and Lansing split a dual Thursday in Tonganoxie, with Tonganoxie High winning the boys varsity and junior varsity races and Lansing High taking both girls races. Lansing won the girls race, 18-40, while Tonganoxie won the boys race, 20-36. In the junior varsity races, Lansing won the girls race, 17-39, and Tonganoxie the boys race, 24-31. Low score wins in cross country.
Tonganoxie football staves off Perry-Lecompton rally for first victory

After jumping out to a 24-0 lead in the second quarter, it looked as though the Tonganoxie High football team would cruise to an easy season-opening victory against Perry-Lecompton. But it took two late interceptions from THS senior safety Ryan Musick and sophomore safety Zac Morgan to help secure a 32-28 victory after the Kaws put together a furious second-half rally. “We persevered in the end,” said THS coach Al Troyer. “We’ve got a young team that needs to grow up quickly and they played well tonight as a group of young guys.”

THS volleyball opens season today at Turner, looks to improve with experienced squad

Tonganoxie High last made a state volleyball appearance in 2007 and has had its share of success in Tiffany Parker’s tenure, which started in 2001. In recent years, though, the Chieftains have finished with overall records below .500. Parker hopes this year’s campaign will end with an improved record as she welcomes back seven seniors for their final season.

When celebrating a big victory, food can be a good option. Tonganoxie High soccer players were all smiles and made a unanimous vote after their season-opening victory Friday against Baldwin: gather for a team meal. THS players were hungry for a win against the Bulldogs, a squad the team had not defeated during Brian Kroll’s tenure at THS. Kroll thought the victory might even have been the program’s first against BHS, even dating beyond Kroll’s time with the squad.

The Tonganoxie High soccer program has experienced unprecedented success under head coach Brian Kroll. Now entering his sixth year at the helm, Kroll has guided THS through several playoff runs, including a state runner-up finish in 2012. The squad became the first-ever THS team in any sport to compete in a state championship game.

British soccer camp returns to Tonganoxie

An annual camp in Tonganoxie had about 25 youths learning the ins and outs of soccer recently. The Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp took place July 20-24 with youths ages 5-8 going in the morning and those ages 9-14 participating in the evening. Rains the first morning kept youths off the Chieftain Park field.

The Tonganoxie High cheer and dance teams won several awards at a spirit camp last month in Salina. THS teams attended spirit camp June 16-19 at Kansas Wesleyan University. The Chieftain Stars dance team earned blue ribbons for its home routine and fight song performances, along with the overall camp leadership award. The team also earned 27 individual blue ribbons for individual dance routines and the Camp Drill Down Award.

Tonganoxie swimmer places at Sunflower State Games

A Tongie Tidal Waves team member placed in a handful of events at the Sunflower State Games in Topeka. Lulu Myers-Arenth placed sixth in the 100 individual medley, seventh in breaststroke and eighth in freestyle. The Sunflower State Games started July 10 and run through Sunday.
