Tonganoxie High softball, winners of 7 of last 8, pushing for another postseason run

Tonganoxie High softball heads into the home stretch of the schedule with a another potential state berth in site. After losing five seniors from the Chieftains’ best team in school history last spring, THS has gotten hot down the stretch. Tonganoxie opened the season 2-4, but has gone 7-1 since that stretch entering play Tuesday. THS currently is the No. 6 seed in the Class 4A East Regional.
Tonganoxie High baseball falls in first round of Butch Foster Memorial Tournament

Tonganoxie High couldn’t get its offense going in the quarterfinals of this year’s Butch Foster Memorial Baseball Tournament. Paola shut out THS, 8-0, Thursday in the first round at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. Paola got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second. Another pair of runs in the fourth and three in the sixth gave the Panthers the victory.
Sample breaks own record again at Kansas Relays; Tonganoxie performs well at home invite

Cole Sample broke his own school record again Saturday at the Kansas Relays. Competing in the shot put on Saturday, The THS junior threw 58 feet, 11.5 inches on his second attempt to finish fourth overall. It was his second event at the Kansas Relays and he finished in the top 12 in both. Sample’s throw put him in second place at the time and he didn’t improve in the finals. Sample scratched on his fifth throw – his furthest of all six.
Tonganoxie High softball heads into week at 7-5

Tonganoxie heads into play this week with a 7-5 record. The Chieftains swept Bonner Springs, 10-0 and 9-3, on April 16 in Tonganoxie and then followed up with a split against Spring Hill on Thursday in games that also were played at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. Tonganoxie won the first game, 3-0, against the Broncos, but fell in the second, 5-3. THS actually had a 3-1 lead in the second game, but SHHS scored four unanswered runs in the later innings and earned the split.
Tonganoxie soccer ties Atchison

Tonganoxie High soccer moved to 1-7-1 after Monday’s tie against Atchison at the Chieftain Park Sporst Complex. THS had a 4-0 lead in the match, but Atchison eventually tied it and the teams finished in a tie after overtime play. THS is on the road Thursday at Piper and back home Tuesday against Heritage Christian.
Tonganoxie softball routs Louisburg

Tonganoxie High softball evened its record at 4-4 after Thursday’s 18-5 victory against Louisburg. THS also won the second game of a doubleheader April 9 against Paola, 7-4. THS was 4-4 overall and 2-4 in Frontier League play heading into Tuesday’s doubleheader at Bonner Springs. THS is back home Thursday agaisnt Spring Hill and then on the road Tuesday at Baldwin.
Tonganoxie High baseball wins at Louisburg

Tonganoxie High bounced back Thursday with an 8-3 Frontier League road victory at Louisburg. THS got off to a good start, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Lousiburg answered with a run of its own, but the Chieftains responded again with two runs in the third and never looked back. THS scored two more in the sixth and then gave up single runs in the sixth and seventh innings before holding on for the victory.
Paola baseball outlasts Tonganoxie, 2-1, in Frontier League clash

Tonganoxie High baseball ended up on the wrong side of a low-scoring Frontier League battle Tuesday. Paola eventually jumped in front in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on first and second and two out, the Panthers’ Fletcher Aude drove in a run on an 0-2 line-drive single to left field. THS tied the game in the top of the sixth, but Paola answered in the bottom-half of the inning and held on for the 2-1 victory.
Tonganoxie HIgh girls win Ottawa meet; Sample sets new shot put record for THS boys

The Tonganoxie High girls track team opened the season with a title and a member of the boys team got a new school record Monday at the Ottawa Invitational. The girls team won the meet with 129 points, with Ottawa taking second with 119. Maur Hill took third (36), Heritage Christian fourth (36), Hayden fifth (33), Kansas City Washington sixth (18) and Bishop Seabury seventh (6).
Late rally not enough for Tonganoxie High baseball; softball, soccer and golf also in action

Tonganoxie High baseball put together a bit of a late rally in its first Frontier League contest, but the Chieftains couldn’t close the entire gap and fell, 6-2, to Spring Hill on Wednesday, March 27, at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. Spring Hill jumped out in front with two runs in the second and another in the third for a 3-0 lead. THS kept them scoreless in the fourth , but the Broncos replicated those previous scores in the fifth and sixth and took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
McLouth’s Purple Hays: MHS fans turn out as team falls just short in historic trip to 2A state tournament

Last week’s Class 2A state basketball quarterfinal pitted the newbies against the old guard. Sure, McLouth had a veteran team, including seasoned guards, heading into the Bulldogs’ first state appearance since 1960. But even Pittsburg Colgan had the advantage on paper in that statistic — McLouth five seniors and seven upperclassmen overall compared to Colgan’s seven seniors and 10 upperclassmen overall. And then there’s the contrast in history. McLouth’s exciting run this year included the school’s first state berth in almost 60 years.
Sample leads Tonganoxie High powerlifting with gold medal

Tonganoxie placed seventh in the Class 4A State Powerlifting Championships, thanks in large part to Cole Sample. The junior scored 10 of Tonganoxie’s 12 points in the meet March 2 at Basehor-Linwood. He placed second in the squat (485), first in the clean (320) and first in the bench press (320). His overall weight lifted was 1,145 in the heavyweight division. Nicholas Smith scored Tonganoxie’s other two points at 132.

McLouth basketball advances to state for 1st time since 1960

McLouth had to adapt to an early Saturday game for the Class 2A Substate Championship at Valley Heights due to pending inclement weather. There would be no more surprises that day. Top-seeded McLouth held an advantage in every quarter Saturday on its way to a monumental 58-33 victory against No. 6 Republic County.
