Tonganoxie USD 464 opted to cancel school today for a more cheerful reason than some crummy winter weather, but the latter might factor into the schedule before this week concludes. District officials announced via social media Monday that today’s classes would be canceled so that families could attend the Kansas City Chiefs victory parade that morning in Kansas City, Mo. Unfortunately, the weather just might rain — or snow or drizzle — on said parade.

Local resident’s Christmas light show continues well past holidays with Chiefs’ historic run

Brandon Masur labored over his new love of a Christmas light show for a full year. Thanks to a dream season with one game to go for the Kansas City Chiefs, Masur is able to enjoy the fruits of his labor just a little bit longer. Masur, a Leavenworth City firefighter who lives in Tonganoxie, decided last Christmas that he wanted to be part of a growing hobby across the nation that takes holiday decorations to a new level with light shows. And then, 3,500 LED pixels, 1,000 feet of wire and “hours and hours and hours in the garage drilling PVC pipe” later, Masur had his masterpiece: a colorful light show set to Christmas songs and an added bonus — a Chiefs song.

The Bobcat Classic always is one of the biggest tournaments of the year. Tonganoxie High finished in the middle of the pack at this year’s boys wrestling meet. THS placed 14th out of 23 teams with 82.5 points. St. Thomas Aquinas won the meet with 162 points. The Saints needed a tiebreaker to defeat Underwood (Iowa), which also had 162.
McLouth Invitational continues Thursday

The 33rd annual McLouth Invitational Tournament started Monday. In girls play, No. 1 Cair Paravel defeated No. 8 Kansas City Christian, 42-30, and No. 2 Maur Hill squeaked by No. 7 Wathena-Riverside, 41-39. In Boys games, No. 1 Maur Hill outlasted No. 8 Silver Lake, 57-47, while No. 2 McLouth defeated No. 7 Wathena-Riverside, 48-31.

The 61st annual Tonganoxie Invitational will continue Thursday and finsh up Friday. Teams with Tonganoxie on the boys side are Bonner Springs, De Soto, Eudora, Maranatha Christian Academy, Metro Academy, Olathe West and Wamego. Bishop Ward, Bonner Springs, De Soto, Eudora, Metro Academy, Sumner Academy and Wamego are on the bracket with THS on the girls side.
Chieftain girls fall short in Spring Hill game at Tonganoxie

Oh so close. The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team trailed Spring Hill, 32-28, late in a Frontier League game Thursday that had been back-and-forth all night. But then came an and-1 from Morgan Brusven that made it 32-31 after the junior’s old-fashioned three-point play.

McLouth also will be the site of a week of basketball with the McLouth Invitational Tournament. Brackets have been finalized for the MIT. For the boys bracket, No. 1 Maur Hill takes on No. 8 Silver Lake, No. 4 Jeff West faces No. 5 Hiawatha and No. 3 Cair Paravel faces No. 6 Veritas Christian. No. 2 McLouth takes on No. 7 Wathena-Riverside in the first round.

McLouth High boys basketball is off to a strong start. The Bulldogs were 4-1 overall and 4-1 in Northeast Kansas League play heading into Tuesday’s game against Maur Hill.

Tonganoxie High boys and basketball games scheduled for Friday against Spring Hill at home now will be played today. Times for all games will be the same, but games were moved up a day due to the threat of inclement weather expected to hit the area starting Friday evening.

The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team opened the 2020 portion of its schedule with a dominating victory. THS defeated Baldwin, 62-27, Jan. 7 in Tonganoxie. Tonganoxie led, 10-6, after the first quarter, but a big second quarter set the tone. The Chieftains outscored the Bulldogs, 22-9, in that period. THS outscored Baldwin in every quarter on its way to the Frontier League victory.
