Tonganoxie’s Savannah Adams competes at 4A state golf tournament

Tonganoxie senior Svannah Adams finished 79th at the Class 4A girls state golf championship Oct. 16 in Hutchinson. Adams, who represented Tonganoxie’s first state qualifier in program history, shot a 123. She scored a 63 on the front nine and a 63 on the back nine. The meet, which had 90 participants, originally was to be played Oct. 15, but inclement weather pushed the meet back. Hayden won the meet with a low score of 331. Andale finished second with a 344 and Chanute third with a 381. Augusta placed fourth (386), Anderson County fifth (387), Winfield sixth (388), Holton seventh (390), Girard eighth (397), Wamego ninth (401), Buhler 10th (404), Concordia 11th (408) and Towanda-Circle 12th (439).
Tonganoxie High football downs Ottawa, will play Chanute in playoffs

It might not have been Tonganoxie’s prettiest victory, but they all count just the same. Tonganoxie High needed late scores to pull away from winless Ottawa, 31-13, Friday in the regular-season finale at Ottawa. Tonganoxie led, 13-0, when Ottawa scored with 1.8 seconds left in the first half on a quarterback scramble. Trailing, 13-6, in the third quarter, OHS scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass, as Ottawa’s Brandon Carlson was wide-open in the left corner of the end zone. With the extra point, but the upstart Cyclones tied the game. Tonganoxie, though, scored three unanswered touchdowns on its way to the victory. It was Tonganoxie’s sixth-straight victory after starting the season 0-2.
Tonganoxie High volleyball to take on Ottawa at Independence substate

Tonganoxie High alums and siblings will be clashing again in the postseason. THS coach Chrissie Jeannin will take on older sister Laura Jeannin and her Ottawa squad Saturday in a Class 4A substate in Independence. THS is the No. 8 seed in its hub of substate brackets. Tonganoxie will take on No. 9 Ottawa (14-21). No. 16 Piper (5-25) and No. 17 Coffeyville (4-25) will compete in a play-in match at 1 p.m.. The winner gets No. 1 Independence (29-1) in Match 2 and then THS-Ottawa will follow as Match 3. The winners of the second and third matches will meet for the substate championship. Tonganoxie is 0-2 so far this season against Ottawa.
Tonganoxie High soccer gets 2-1 senior victory against Eudora

Tonganoxie High sent its veteran players out on a high note in their last home match. THS defeated Eudora, 2-1, Thursday on Senior Night. The Chieftains (6-6-1 overall and 3-4-0 in Frontier League play) got out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and held onto it. The Cardinals scored once in the second half, but THS didn’t allow an equalizer.
McLouth High football winning streak should propel team into 2A playoffs

The McLouth High football team should be a lock for the Class 2A playoffs. The top four teams in each six-team district advance to the playoffs. After rattling off three victories, MHS is 4-3 overall and 3-1 in district play. McLouth finishes up the regular season this coming Friday at Osage City (6-1 overall and 3-1 in district play). With a victory, MHS likely would be the second-place team in District 2, and Osage City would be the third-place team. An Osage City victory likely would switch those standings. During the winning streak, MHS defeated West Franklin (26-24), Oskaloosa (54-0) and then Central Heights (54-14) on Friday at Stan Braksick Sports Complex in McLouth.

The Tonganoxie High defense managed its first shutout of the season Friday in a 20-0 victory against Baldwin at Beatty Field. The Chieftains held the visiting Bulldogs to two first downs and just 35 plays compared to Tonganoxie’s 18 first downs and 68 plays.
Baldwin, Tonganoxie football to clash for only the 16th time in program history

Tonganoxie and Baldwin are fairly close geographically, but the two schools from neighboring counties have met just 15 times since 1941. Tonganoxie leads the series, 9-6. Baldwin won the first meeting, 20-0, in 1941, according to THS alum and local football historian Jeff Hughes.

The Tonganoxie High boys cross country team continues its streak of team titles. THS won Thursday’s Frontier League Meet at the Baldwin Golf Course. Calvin Morgan led the Chieftains with an individual title in the race. The girls set several personal records on their way to a sixth-place finish.

Tonganoxie High cross country is continuing its pattern. With the exception of the Rim Rock Classic, the boys team has won every meet and the girls have been the runner-up. On Thursday at the Perry-Lecompton Invitational near Lake Perry, the boys again took first.

The Tonganoxie High girls golf team placed sixth last week at Village Greens golf course. Meghan Heskett placed 15th individually , as she shot a 100 on the day. The team competed again Monday in Garnett and will also compete Monday at Falcon Lakes Country Club in Basehor.

It’s not the greatest scenario in the world, but it makes for exciting football and the final score is all that matters. After starting the season 0-2, Tonganoxie High has rattled off three straight victories. In all three games, THS has fallen behind — the last two in the opening moments of the game — but has battled back with unanswered runs that have suddenly put THS in a strong position heading into the last three games of the regular season.

After taking fourth at its own tournament Sept. 22, the Tonganoxie High volleyball team continued its momentum with two victories Sept. 24 at home. THS defeated Kansas City Christian, 25-5, 25-11, and then Baldwin, 27-25, 25-13.
Tonganoxie soccer suffers loss after three-match winning streak

It would be hard to accuse the 2018 Tonganoxie High boys soccer team of being boring. Through nine matches, all but three contests have been decided by one goal. Of those three remaining contests, the first two of the season, the first was a tie and the second 9-0 victory. The third, unfortunately, was the team’s last defeat.
