McLouth’s Purple Hays: MHS fans turn out as team falls just short in historic trip to 2A state tournament
March 13, 2019
Last week’s Class 2A state basketball quarterfinal pitted the newbies against the old guard. Sure, McLouth had a veteran team, including seasoned guards, heading into the Bulldogs’ first state appearance since 1960. But even Pittsburg Colgan had the advantage on paper in that statistic — McLouth five seniors and seven upperclassmen overall compared to Colgan’s seven seniors and 10 upperclassmen overall. And then there’s the contrast in history. McLouth’s exciting run this year included the school’s first state berth in almost 60 years.

PERFECTION: Riedel caps undefeated season with Tonganoxie’s first state champion in program history; Searcy becomes 2nd matches later
February 27, 2019
Korbin Riedel’s goal had been unchanged since his freshman year, but history had shown it to be a tall order in Tonganoxie. The senior’s end goal always was to be a state champion. The THS wrestling room has plenty of wall plaques indication accolades and state medalists, but there was a void: no state champions. The wall decor soon will be changing. On Saturday, Riedel became Tonganoxie High’s first gold medalist — and the program’s first undefeated champ to boot.

MHS boys to be top seed in 2A substate at Valley Heights
February 20, 2019
The Bulldogs have a shot at tying Maur Hill-Mount Academy for the NEKL title, but MHS would have to win out and have another NEKL team also knock off the Ravens in the final week. More importantly, the Bulldogs will be the top seed in the Class 2A Valley Heights Substate. If McLouth were to stumble this week, the Bulldogs still would be the top seed, as Valley Heights is the No. 2 seed at 12-9. MHS likely will open the substate with a home game against Atchison County (0-19).
