A breakout night from Tonganoxie High senior Taylor Lee helped the Chieftains secure their first victory of the season Friday at home. Lee poured in 40 points — a new school record — as Tonganoxie sailed past Ottawa, 62-38.

The Tonganoxie High wrestling team continued its impressive start to the season with a strong showing at the Eudora Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday. With seven of its 11 wrestlers placing in the top four and medaling, THS placed third with 228 points on Saturday behind Lousiburg (243) and Emporia (257.5).

Tonganoxie High wrestling opened the season as one of the top teams in the Chieftains’ opening invitational. THS placed second with 224.5 points at Saturday’s Wamego Invitational. Tonganoxie finished behind only perennial power Abilene at the meet. The Cowboys finished the day with 290.5 points.

Winter sports are about to get started with basketball and wrestling competition later this week. But last week, a new tradition started with an event like the late night celebrations for the first basketball practice of the year at the college level. Jodie Smith’s applied business class organized the event, while various groups helped with duties throughout the night, including the Big Red student pep club and the event planning class. There also were many individuals who participated in the event to kick off winter sports programs at Tonganoxie High.

The winter season is coming. Preseason practice got started Nov. 14 for Tonganoxie High basketball and wrestling teams. It’s been full speed ahead for the teams, including a new tradition for the boys and girls basketball teams. On Tuesday, the teams had an event similar to college basketball’s preseason kickoff to practices. Instead of a standard Red/White scrimmage, festivities started at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday with activities such as a 3-point contest between the boys and girls teams, a half-court shooting contest, THS seniors vs. staff basketball scrimmage, fan giveaways and more.
Tonganoxie’s Parker stepping down after 16 years as THS volleyball coach

Tiffany Parker established Tonganoxie High as one of the top teams in the area in her 16 seasons leading the Chieftain volleyball team. For many of those seasons, her husband, Brandon, either was an assistant or co-head coach. In those 16 seasons, Tiffany Parker compiled a record of 310-228 and had three state tournament appearances, four seasons of 30 victories or more and nine seasons of 25 victories or more. Oh, and compare that to just three losing seasons during that tenure.

The Tonganoxie High football players gathered near the goalpost and shed tears as they watched Basehor-Linwood hoist a district championship plaque Friday in Basehor. The Chieftains put up a valiant effort, but ultimately fell short to the undefeated Bobcats, 27-12. The loss dropped THS to 5-4 for its final record of the year and postponed any postseason dreams for another season.

Tonganoxie High’s cross country fortunes at regionals provided a notable spot in school history. The team’s results at state provided an even bigger addition to the history annals. Tonganoxie placed fifth at state for both the boys and girls teams in the same season for the first time since 1989. And, the team landed an individual runner in the top 10.

It was a red-clad celebration at midfield Thursday at the Maur Hill soccer field. Tonganoxie had just defeated Maur Hill, 1-0, for a regional championship and parents and players were snapping photo after photo with the team trophy. At one point, coach Brian Kroll did a happy dance of sorts. His team had just clinched its first regional title since 2014 and life was good.

The Tonganoxie High volleyball team seemed in prime position to start off state with a victory for a second consecutive year. THS led, 9-4, early in the third and final set against No. 5 Paola in the match’s third set. Paola, though, went on a 6-1 run, tying the game at 10.
Tonganoxie High soccer opens 4-1A regionals as No. 4 seed

The Tonganoxie High soccer team has been a squad of streaks this year. THS won seven in a row before dropping five consecutive matches. The Chieftains hope the trend can continue on the positive side, as the team has started a two-match winning streak. THS defeated Bishop Ward, 5-0, at home and then blanked Immaculata, 10-0, in Leavenworth, improving to 10-6 on the season. Tonganoxie will open the postseason as the No. 4 seed in the Class 4-1A Northeast Regional.
