The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team had a week off and a two-game winning streak heading into its game Friday at Piper. The Chieftains left Kansas City, Kan., without a winning streak.

The Baldwin Invitational Tournament was a bit of an experiment for the Tonganoxie High wrestling team. Some wrestlers competed at new weights as the team looked to compete against a solid field. In the process, the Chieftains lost one wrestler for the year.

The Tonganoxie High girls were rolling for two quarters — and then came the second half. THS led Bishop Ward, 30-9, heading into the third quarter, but coach David Hall said his staff warned the team that the Cyclones would be making adjustments in the third quarter.

The Tonganoxie High boys team managed to lead Bishop Ward after a quarter without making a field goal. THS made six free throws and led BWHS, 6-5, heading into the second quarter.
Jeff West outlasts Tonganoxie girls

The Tonganoxie High girls entered their home invitational with a goal of two victories. A win in the consolation semifinals put them in position to make that happen, but they couldn’t replicate that success in Saturday’s finale. THS committed 18 turnovers and couldn’t overcome a 26.5-percent shooting performance in a 42-29 loss to Jeff West in the fifth-place game of the 12th annual girls tournament.

For nearly three full quarters, the Tonganoxie High boys had themselves in position for a fifth-place finish in their home invitational. However, a plethora of mistakes down the stretch quickly derailed the Chieftains’ chance for a successful tournament finish.

The Tonganoxie High wrestling team finished in the middle of the pack at Saturday’s Gerald Sadowski Tournament in Holton. THS placed eighth out of 15 teams with 91 points.

This year’s Tonganoxie Invitational provided plenty of excitement to spectators. The tournament had three overtime games and nine matchups decided by five points or less, including three that were won by a point.

When a game is tied seven times and has five lead changes, that’s a decent indication the game is a good one. The Tonganoxie High Boys had a 31-22 lead Thursday against Metro Academy, but the game became was back-and-forth most of the night before THS won, 65-60.

For most of Friday’s visit to Mill Valley, the Tonganoxie High boys had themselves in position to win. However, a series of missed shots in the fourth quarter proved more than a little costly. THS trailed by just five points entering the fourth quarter, but the Jaguars pulled away late to hand the Chieftains a 53-46 loss.
