Tonganoxie High softball was rolling in the early going of the season. The Chieftains hope they can recapture that spark as regionals approach. The squad was hitting on virtually all cylinders after 11 games. The Chieftains were 9-2 at that point. THS, though, lost a rain-drenched game to Spring Hill, 10-7, on April 29. That started a seven-game skid that has left the team at .500 with a 9-9 record.

Dylan Staatz has been competing in track events since fifth grade. He was jumping around 15 feet in seventh grade and was in the 18s his freshman year. Now as a senior, he’s jumping in the 21s.

After being rained out for the previous week, the Tonganoxie High softball team was finally able to get back on the field on Friday. However, the weather wasn’t much better in the team’s 10-7 loss to the Spring Hill Broncos. With a constant rain for more than two hours, conditions were far from ideal for a softball game. The infield resembled a mud pit and there were multiple instances where the ball slipped through players’ hands.
Golfers place 5th at Hayden Invitational

Tonganoxie High golfers finished fifth out of nine teams at last week’s Hayden Invitational. THS shot a 361 as a team in finishing in the middle of the pack. Piper won the meet with low score of 323. Mill Valley placed second with 340, while Ottawa was third with the same score. Hayden placed fourth with 354. De Soto (370), Cornerstone (373), Basehor-Linwood (406) and Lansing (426) placed last.

The Tonganoxie High baseball team bounced back in exciting fashion Thursday in Kansas City, Kan. The Chieftains, down 8-4 heading into the final inning, plated five runs in the top of the seventh and pulled ahead 9-8. THS held on in Turner’s half of the seventh for the 1-run victory. Tonganoxie’s thrilling comeback win came after a tough loss in game 1. It was almost a turnabout move after the first game.

Tonganoxie High athletes got a taste of the state track atmosphere with last weekend’s Kansas Relays. A handful of Tonganoxie track and field athletes qualified for the 89th annual Kansas Relays. Dylan Staatz had the highest finish for THS boys qualifiers. Staatz took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 6.25 inches.

The Tonganoxie High softball team just keeps rolling along. THS swept Turner on Thursday, 8-0 and 16-3, in games at Kansas City, Kan. The sweep helped Tonganoxie move to 8-2 on the season.

The wins are starting to come for the Tonganoxie High girls soccer team. After playing their way through a loaded schedule and starting the season 1-7, the Chieftains have not lost in their last three competitions.

An exciting finish in the first game gave way to a rout in the second game for the Tonganoxie High softball team. The Chieftains were home to Bonner Springs on April 12 at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds and in the middle of nail-biter.

Tonganoxie High boys and girls track teams both finished with third-place finishes at their home meet Thursday at Beatty Field. Lansing won both titles, scoring 156 on the boys side and 165 in the girls standings.

The winter weather spell came and went Easter weekend, but the snow spurt hasn’t hindered Tonganoxie High golf in the early going of the season. THS had been practicing the last few weeks and has gotten a good amount of work in on various area golf courses in preparation for the new season.

The Tonganoxie High baseball team has played in some exciting games in the season’s early going. THS, which is preparing for a Thursday doubleheader on the road in Lansing, is 2-2 on the season. The Chieftains have scored 21 runs and allowed 20. Last Wednesday, March 30, Tonganoxie fell in eight innings to Jeff West on the road, 6-5, before bouncing back for an 8-5 victory in the nightcap. That contest followed a season-opening doubleheader in which the Chieftains fell, 8-5, to Bishop Ward in the first game and bounced back for victory in the second game, 3-1.
