McLouth High boys basketball advances to 3A substate semifinals

The McLouth High boys basketball team will have a chance to knock off the No. 1 seed in its Class 3A substate. No. 4 MHS (11-10) routed No. 5 Mission Valley, 58-35, Monday in a 3A quarterfinal game at McLouth.
Tonganoxie’s Riedel, Hand to wrestle for state titles in respective divisions at state; THS in 4th heading into Day 2

Tonganoxie High has two wrestlers who will battle for state titles tomorrow in Salina. Senior Justin Hand (37-8) and junior Korbin Riedel (43-3) will compete for Class 4A individual titles in the 170- and 138-pound weight divisions, respectively. Hand will take on Basehor-Linwood senior Jon Trowbridge (34-1) for the 170 title. Riedel faces Arkansas City’s Marcus Robinson in the 138 championship. The senior is 41-4 on the season. Freshman Hunter Harris is the lone Chieftain unable to advance to Day 2.
Tonganoxie High basketball games moved up due to impending weather

Tonganoxie High basketball games against Bonner Springs today will be moved up an hour due to another anticipated ice storm. The games, which are being played at Bonner Springs High School, will be moved up an hour. Junior varsity girls now play at 3 p.m. and junior varsity boys 3:15 p.m. Freshmen boys are to start at 4:30 p.m. and varsity girls at 4:45 p.m. Freshmen girls play at 6 p.m. and varsity boys at 6:15 p.m.
Tonganoxie wrestlers 4A regional runners-up; state brackets announced

Tonganoxie is headed to state Friday in Salina with seven wrestlers. The Chieftains qualified seven out of 10 wrestlers to participate for state with their performance Saturday at which THS finished as regional runner-up in Holton. Bonner Springs won the Class 4A regional with 207 points. Tonganoxie scored 153.5 for second, just ahead of Holton, which took third with 152.

Tonganoxie is in a tie for second place heading into the second day of competition at the Class 4A Holton Regional. Bonner Springs, ranked No. 3 in 4A, leads the field with 134 after the first day. Holton and Tonganoxie both have 104 points.

Tonganoxie High participated in its final Kaw Valley League wrestling meet Saturday in Lansing. The Chieftains, ranked No. 4 in Class 4A, weren’t able to come away with a league crown, but THS still finished third at the league meet.

Tonganoxie routed Heritage Christian Academy, 55-19, Jan. 23, but fell short Friday against Tonganoxie Invitational champ Eudora, 51-37. The THS girls defeated Heritage Christian, 47-35, but then lost to Eudora, 50-22. Both teams are 3-9 and played Turner on Tuesday after The Mirror’s deadline and Piper on Friday, both nights in Tonganoxie.

Tonganoxie High had a big weekend at the 17th annual Baldwin Invitational Tournament. The Chieftains ranked No. 4 in Class 4A, placed second out of 16 teams, scoring 161 points on the day. Holton won the tournament with 190.

Tonganoxie wrestlers take sixth at De Soto Duals tournament

Tonganoxie High placed sixth out of 10 teams Saturday at the De Soto Duals tournament. In pool play, THS opened against Lansing. The Lions won, 65-18, but THS bounced back in its next round. The Chieftains earned a tiebreaker victory after a 36-36 tie. The Chieftains then were on the losing end of a tiebreaker against Shawnee Mission North. The Indians won via tiebreaker after a 30-30 match.

The Tonganoxie High boys were gaining momentum in their home tournament after nearly knocking off a state-ranked team and then routing another in the consolation bracket. On Saturday, though, the Chieftains couldn’t overcome a slow start against Metro Academy in the fifth-place game. Tonganoxie battled back in the third quarter after trailing, 28-15, at halftime, but Metro eventually took control again and won, 55-40.

The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team got a resounding victory at its home tournament Thursday, while the THS girls bounced back from a rough first game Tuesday and nearly knocked off Wamego in the second round. Tbe THS boys shot nearly 53 percent from the field and cruised to a 63-36 victory against Holton in the consolation bracket.

The 59th annual Tonganoxie Invitational begins today with the boys bracket. Eudora plays Metro Academy at 4 p.m. and then De Soto and Holton take the court at 5:30 p.m. Tonganoxie faces Wamego in the final game of the day. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
