The Tonganoxie High volleyball season opened Tuesday with a 4 p.m. dual match against Lansing at THS. The match did not meet The Mirror’s print deadline. The match marked the first for the Christina Jeannin era, as she takes over for longtime Chieftain coach Tiffany Parker, who also coached Jeannin when she was in high school at THS. The team again is in action at 4 p.m. Thursday with a dual against Eudora.

Tonganoxie High girls golf gets first medals in school history

Savannah Adams and Morgan Brusven captured the first medals in school history for the THS girls golf team last week. They placed sixth at the season-opening meet. The season continues Thursday at the Lake Perry Country Club.

It’s time. Tonganoxie High opens the football season on the road against Spring Hill with a veteran team. The Chieftains have some 20 seniors on the squad as they look to contend for a conference title in the final season of the Kaw Valley League.

The Tonganoxie High cross country team is ready to build on last year’s big finish at state. With both teams finishing in the top 5 in the same year at state — a feat the program hasn’t accomplished since the early 1990s — this year looks to be promising on paper. Gone are some top runners to graduation, such as Emily Chambers and Drew Cook. But John Tollefson’s team returns with a loaded senior class on the girls side and a boys team that features solid seniors and up and coming seniors.
New Tonganoxie High boys soccer era greets seasoned seniors

A new era in Tonganoxie High boys soccer got off on the right foot last week. The Chieftains improved to 1-0 with a 4-2 victory against Baldwin on Friday at the THS soccer complex. The victory obviously was the first of the year, but also marked the first for coach Jon Orndorff, who replaced longtime THS coach Brian Kroll in the offseason. Orndorff said he wasn’t sure how that first game was going to play out following the preseason, but he was pleased with the results.
Scrimmages, introductions to showcase many Tonganoxie High teams tonight

Tonganoxie High fall sports teams have gotten their first week of practice under their belts. Soon it will be time to showcase themselves for the first time in front of the home crowd. Red/White Scrimmages and Introductions will take place Thursday, with volleyball scrimmages running from 4-5:15 p.m. at the Tonganoxie High main gymnasium. The Tonganoxie Middle School football team then will scrimmage 5:45-6:45 p.m. at Beatty Field, with football introductions starting at 7 p.m.
Tonganoxie High soccer coming home

If the weather cooperates, the Tonganoxie High boys soccer team could start playing home games at Chieftain Park late next month. About a half dozen THS seniors spoke at Thursday’s Tonganoxie Recreation Commission board meeting about wanting to return to playing games at Chieftain Park.
New Tonganoxie High track open to runners, walkers for now

Patrons are now free to walk on the new track at Beatty Field. Tonya Phillips, interim USD 464 superintendent, told the board at Monday’s regular school board meeting that work on the track is finished other than painting lane lines and other markings. Until then, visitors can walk and run on the renovated track, which now is red.
Tonganoxie High girls golf era begins this fall

Just like that, Tonganoxie High has another sports program. The school board approved the new sport by a unanimous vote at a special meeting this past Thursday. On Monday, at its regular meeting, the board approved Doug Sandburg as the girls coach. Sandburg also coaches the boys team. He started with the program in 2009, serving six seasons before taking over as head coach in 2015. The girls season is in the fall and the boys season in the spring. Sandburg said Monday he’s still working on the lineup for Tonganoxie’s newest team. THS is slated to compete in six tournaments this fall.

The early birds were out and about Monday morning. Tonganoxie High opened the fall season with 12:01 a.m. practices Monday, continuing a tradition that the THS cross country team started several years ago. THS cross country coach John Tollefson said he was excited for his team to get the season started.

And so it begins. One of the first signs that summer vacation is drawing to a close is the start of fall sports season. KSHSAA teams can begin practice Monday. And, as has been customary in Tonganoxie in recent years, Tonganoxie High teams won’t be wasting any time, as teams will start their first practice at midnight Monday morning. For the THS cross country team, the season will start gathering at the high school and then going for a run around town. Parents and other volunteers post up along the route to make it a safe route in case there is traffic. And of course, the runners will be hitting the pavement in the dark. Monday starts the 2017 season for THS cross country, football, soccer and volleyball, as does it for McLouth cross country, football and volleyball.

The new track at Beatty Field definitely has school spirit. Workers painted the track red on Monday. The track previously was black and now, of course, is Tonganoxie High’s primary school color. It’s also become a popular color for tracks across the country.
Rickard ready to embark on college career at Ottawa

Keaton Rickard weighed his options in continuing his football career at the college level. In the end, he opted to head south. Rickard signed earlier this year to play football at Ottawa University. He also seriously considered the short trip north to Leavenworth and University of St. Mary. He also had his eye on the short trip west to Washburn in Topeka.
