Tonganoxie High girls outlast Bishop Ward in overtime

The Tonganoxie girls basketball team picked up their second consecutive win, defeating Bishop Ward in Friday’s 45-42 overtime thriller. Despite dealing with a sickness that kept her out of practice and the starting lineup, senior Taylor Lee was able to make the most of her limited minutes, scoring 15 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Tonganoxie High boys get 1st victory at home tournament

The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team has its first victory of the season thanks to its home tournament. THS played De LaSalle in the seventh-place game Saturday. De LaSalle didn’t have any games otherwise in the tournament, but was penciled in to take on a team in the losers bracket for seventh place.

Tonganoxie High has another tournament title to its credit this wrestling season. This time, it’s in the form of a dual championship. THS placed first Friday in the De Soto dual tournament after defeating the host school, 53-27, in the championship match. Bonner Springs defeated Shawnee Mission North, 48-24, for third, while Pleasant Ridge outlasted Wyandotte, 33-24, for fifth. Piper beat Kansas City Washington, 30-27, for seventh place.
McLouth High girls take 2nd at home invitational

The McLouth High girls basketball team finished second at its own tournament Saturday. The Bulldogs won earlier in the week against Kansas City Christian and Bishop Seabury to get to the title game. Against Cair Paravel, however, the Bulldogs just couldn’t get much going.

The Tonganoxie High wrestling team hopes Mother Nature is its friend this week. Potential for inclement weather this past weekend forced the cancellation of the Basehor-Linwood invitational, marking the second time this season weather has thrown a wrench in schedule plans. The first happened the weekend of what was supposed to be the Randy Starcher Memorial Wrestling Tournament in December at Tonganoxie High.

Hickman led the Firebirds with 284 kills, breaking the school record for career kills, totaling 730. The 6-foot-4 senior middle hitter led the Sunflower League with 124 blocks and ranked sixth with a .378 hit percentage. The three-time all-Sunflower League selection has signed to play at Creighton.

In his final prep season, Cook won a Kaw Valley League title in a time of 16:48. The Chieftains’ senior followed it up by placing third at his regional and 10th at the Class 4A state meet. Cook was also a medalist at the Rim Rock Classic.

Tonganoxie High will have to wait to compete in front of its home crowd. Saturday’s Randy Starcher Memorial Invitational was canceled due to inclement weather. Because so many tournaments are scheduled for Saturdays during the season, it could be difficult rescheduling this home tournament.

A breakout night from Tonganoxie High senior Taylor Lee helped the Chieftains secure their first victory of the season Friday at home. Lee poured in 40 points — a new school record — as Tonganoxie sailed past Ottawa, 62-38.
