Tonganoxie High cross country team once again made a clean sweep this year with its showing Thursday at the Perry-Lecompton Invitational. THS won both varsity team titles and both junior varsity team titles.

Tonganoxie’s drive that lasted for a majority of the second quarter felt bigger with each passing minute. It should have ended on fourth and long with junior quarterback Mason Beach running out of bounds short of the first down.

Tonganoxie High represented well on its home cross country course Tuesday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. Both varsity teams won the overall team title, as did the the junior varsity boys.

Tonganoxie High looked ready to put the cherry atop a big week of soccer Friday at the Chieftain Park Sports Complex. THS had gone 3-0 so far and was playing its fourth match in five days. It led Maranatha Academy, 2-0, in the second half, but a penalty kick and another goal from the Eagles provided the equalizer with 3:04 left in regulation.

Tonganoxie High was down, 7-0, to Shawnee Mission Northwest in the final match of pool play Saturday at its home meet when a Cougar service error put THS on the board. moments later, THS cut the lead to five at 8-3. “Come on, we gotta stay on a roll,” THS coach Tiffany Parker pleaded to her team from the bench. “Let’s go.” The team did just that at its home invitational.

The Tonganoxie High volleyball team finished its first tournament of the season with a winning record. THS placed fifth Saturday at the Rossville Invitational with a 3-2 record. Tonganoxie opened pool play with a victory against Ottawa, 25-22, 17-25, 25-20.

The Tonganoxie High boys soccer team only just started its most difficult week of the season Monday with the first of four games in the five days. The hectic week couldn’t have started much better for the Chieftains. Behind stellar passing and dominating possession, Tonganoxie cruised to a 6-2 victory against Eudora at the Chieftain Park Sports Complex. Junior Zeb Huseman and senior captain Logan Williams led the way with two goals each. The win improved the Chieftains to 5-1, as THS now has won four consecutive matches.

The Tonganoxie High boys soccer team is off to a strong 4-1 start that has included two overtime victories. But this week’s hectic schedule will be a key one for the Chieftains, as the slate will nearly double the team’s number of games played this season.

Tonganoxie High athletics sweeps competitions for the week

It was a good week for Tonganoxie High athletics. All of its varsity squads swept competitions last week. The THS soccer team got back on track with a 9-0 victory Sept. 6 and then 3-2 on Thursday against Bishop Ward. Those victories improved the squad to 3-1 on the season.
OVERTIME THRILLER: Tonganoxie football outlasts Eudora, 46-40

Zac Morgan’s 154 total yards on offense, three touchdowns and a 78-yard punt return touchdown led Tonganoxie to a 46-40 overtime win over Eudora. After Eudora (1-1) fumbled on the first play of overtime, Mason Beach threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Caden Searcy to win the game for Tonganoxie.
Tonganoxie High cross country competes well against Lansing

Tonganoxie opened the cross country season last week with a dual on the road against Lansing. The THS boys nearly had a victory, scoring 29 to Lansing’s low score of 27. The Lions also won the girls meet with 21 points to the Chieftains’ 35. In the boys race, Tonganoxie’s Drew Cook took first with a time of 18 minutes, 5 seconds. Carter Kietzmann placed second in 18:50 and Calvin Morgan sixth with 19:43 time. Jakob Foley placed ninth (20:08) and Chandler Hamman 11th (20:24).
