Eudora outlasts Tonganoxie girls with work on the glass
Rebounding advantages helps Cardinals to 45-37 victory

With just 30 seconds remaining, senior Kaitlin Hall nailed a deep three to bring Tonganoxie within one possession at 40-37. But Eudora senior LeAnne Anderson scored two of her eight points on her next trip to the free throw line, which effectively sealed the Tonganoxie Chieftains fate in a 45-37 loss to the Eudora Cardinals in the first game in the consolation bracket of the Tonganoxie Basketball Invitational.

The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team had its opportunity to get on a tournament run at its own invitational Monday. A talented Jeff West team, though, squelched those hopes, thanks in large part to a dominant third quarter.

Heading into Friday’s game, the Tonganoxie Chieftains were still in search of their first win of the season. But after a strong first quarter gave the Mill Valley Jaguars a 25-11 lead, there was little doubt the Tonganoxie Chieftains would have to wait at least one more game for a chance at a win.

Just four minutes into the game, the Tonganoxie girls basketball team found themselves in a 13-2 hole thanks in large part to seven early turnovers. The team would fight back, but was never able to overcome their slow start in a 62-33 loss to Mill Valley.

In one of the marquee tournaments each wrestling season, Tonganoxie finished in the middle of the pack as a team this year. Tonganoxie High placed three wrestlers individually, helping the Chieftains to a 19th-place finish at Saturday’s Bobcat Classic at Basehor-Linwood.
McLouth’s Greene signs to pitch for Saint Mary softball

A record-setting McLouth High softball pitcher hopes to continue her success collegiately close to home. Shannon Greene, a senior at MHS, signed a national letter of intent last semester to play softball at University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth. Greene said she looked at Bethel College and Fort Scott Community College, but ultimately chose the closest option.
Tonganoxie teams still searching for first victories of basketball season

The Tonganoxie High girls and boys basketball teams will look to make fresh starts in 2016. Both teams fell to 0-4 on the season with home losses Friday against Basehor-Linwood. The THS girls team nearly cracked the win column against BLHS, but the Bobcats eventually pulled away for the 55-47 win.

Tonganoxie kept on plugging away in tournament competition this past Friday and Saturday at the Eudora Tournament of Champions. Several wrestlers turned in third-place finishes as THS placed sixth out of 23 teams. Rossville, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, won the meet with 287 points. THS had 170 in sixth. “They wrestled tough,” THS coach Ross Starcher said about his team. “A lot of them had seven, eight matches. They just kept going and going.”

Tonganoxie tried to work the ball around for better shots Friday, but the Ottawa defense gave the Chieftains some problems in a non-conference game in Ottawa. Tonganoxie fell into an early hole and trailed, 13-3, after the first quarter. THS couldn’t make up the difference and Ottawa eventually prevailed, 53-35.
McLouth teams drop road games

The McLouth boys basketball team fell to 0-3 after losing two games last week. Horton rolled MHS, 78-31, Dec. 8 in Horton before Immaculata kept the Bulldogs winless on Friday in Immaculata. The Raiders won, 57-30.
Substate, regional assignments for Tongaoxie, McLouth

Substate and regional assignments have been announced for high school basketball and wrestling. Tonganoxie will be the host for a Class 4A Division I substate March 3-5 at THS. Other teams at the substate are Atchison, De Soto and Eudora. All games will be played at Tonganoxie High School.

The complete review of the Wichita State University athletics department is underway and one of the many subjects is whether to resume a football program, president John Bardo said.
