THS boys struggle down stretch against De Soto

For nearly three full quarters, the Tonganoxie High boys had themselves in position for a fifth-place finish in their home invitational. However, a plethora of mistakes down the stretch quickly derailed the Chieftains’ chance for a successful tournament finish.

The Tonganoxie High wrestling team finished in the middle of the pack at Saturday’s Gerald Sadowski Tournament in Holton. THS placed eighth out of 15 teams with 91 points.

This year’s Tonganoxie Invitational provided plenty of excitement to spectators. The tournament had three overtime games and nine matchups decided by five points or less, including three that were won by a point.

When a game is tied seven times and has five lead changes, that’s a decent indication the game is a good one. The Tonganoxie High Boys had a 31-22 lead Thursday against Metro Academy, but the game became was back-and-forth most of the night before THS won, 65-60.

For most of Friday’s visit to Mill Valley, the Tonganoxie High boys had themselves in position to win. However, a series of missed shots in the fourth quarter proved more than a little costly. THS trailed by just five points entering the fourth quarter, but the Jaguars pulled away late to hand the Chieftains a 53-46 loss.

David Hall sensed the Tonganoxie High girls had started to turn a corner in their first win Jan. 13 against Turner. The Chieftains weren’t able to replicate that success Friday at Mill Valley, but further progress was still evident in the eyes of their coach.

Tonganoxie girls lose to hot-shooting Basehor-Linwood

Basehor-Linwood and Tonganoxie each entered Thursday night’s game looking for its first victory of the season and momentum heading into the holiday break after playing many of the best teams in Class 4A. By the end of the night, it was the Lady Bobcats who gave themselves a much-needed boost by defeating Tonganoxie 56-28 in both teams’ final game of 2014.

The Basehor-Linwood boys basketball team put together a 23-8 third-quarter on the way to a 79-43 victory Thursday night against Tonganoxie. Tonganoxie senior Brady Swedo kept his team in the game in the first half, scoring 18 points, including four 3-pointers. He finished the game with 20 points and was the only Tonganoxie player to finish in double figures.
