Final Tongie Tidal Waves laps or 2017

The Tongie Tidal Waves concluded yet another season with the league championships June 30 at Tonganoxie Water Park. Unfortunately, younger swimmers didn’t get to complete their league championship races because of inclement weather June 29. The Tidal Waves still at an awards night this past week. “It’s hard to imagine that our swim season has come to an end,” said coach Janet Falk. “However, all of the swimmers and families are excited and looking forward to returning next summer for another fun-filled season.”

The grass could be greener year round at Beatty Field in the coming years. Michelle Kuhns with Hellas Construction spoke to the Tonganoxie USD 464 School Board during its regular meeting Monday about artificial turf.

The Tongie Tidal Waves finished the season with league championships Friday. Inclement weather canceled Thursday’s planned competetion for youths ages 5-10. However, the 11-18 divisions were able to compete Friday as planned.
KSHSAA classes to change in 2018-19

Classifications will be shifting for Kansas high school sports starting with the 2018-19 school year. Kansas High School Activities Association schools recently voted whether to adopt reclassifications for football and all other sports. The two proposals passed with the required number of votes, 145 for football and 177 for the other sports. For football, 6A and 5A will stay with 32 teams, while 4A no longer will have divisions. That class also will go to 32 teams. The 3A members will be the next 48 largest schools, the same number of teams that will be in 2A. Previously, football had a Class 2-1A level, but moving forward 1A will have its own 11-man level. All remaining 11-man teams will compete in 1A.
On to Dodge for Tonganoxie High standout Lee

Taylor Lee will be traveling to the opposite corner of the state to continue her basketball career. But it’s a familiar face on the open plains that played into her major decision. Lee, a Tonganoxie High standout who just graduated in May, decided earlier this year to sign with Dodge City Community College for basketball. “I decided to choose Dodge because my coach from AAU was an assistant at Dodge,” Lee said about DCCC assistant Sta’Nisha Garlington . “I really enjoy her as a coach. She taught me a lot of things. I would like to continue to work with her.” Lee said she also liked head coach Zach Loll, who recently took over at Dodge City after several successful seasons at an Illinois community college.
Tongie Tidal Waves dive in to new season

The Tongie Tidal Waves season officially has started. The team had its first meet Friday against Piper. Tonganoxie has 134 swimmers this year, while Piper had more than 110. Piper won the meet, 300-23iewrei The swim season continues this Friday with another home meet. It starts at 7:30 a.m. and will be against Lake Quivira and Lake Forest. The meet is expected to finish up around noon.
Lawrence Memorial 5K Summer Spray series again includes Tonganoxie date

The Lawrence Memorial Hospital Summer Spray 5K Run/Walk Series is returning this summer. Eudora will be the first venue June 10. The Baldwin City run will be June 24 and then the Tonganoxie event July 15.

So let me get this straight: Dr. Doug Girod was chosen to lead the University of Kansas into the next decade, but the retiring boss gets to decide who will lead the new chancellor’s athletic department. Wow!
Tonganoxie teams land players on all-league squads

Tonganoxie High landed five players on the all-Kaw Valley League softball team this year. Junior Delainey Fenoglio earned first-team honors as designated hitter, as did fellow junior Torissa Hootman as an outfielder. Both had top votes at their positions.

Tonganoxie High has a state champion in track and field. THS junior LeeRoi Johnson won gold in discus Friday, finishing with a throw of 180 feet, 3 inches and capping off one of the top discus seasons in the country this past weekend at the state track and field championships at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.

The postseason starts today for some Tonganoxie High teams. Tonganoxie golf opened its Class 4A regional at 8:30 a.m. in Atchison against Atchison, Baldwin, Basehor-Linwood, Bishop Miege, Bonner Springs, Jeff West, Ottawa, Piper and Spring Hill at Village Greens Golf Course in Ozawkie.
Tonganoxie High grad Ben Johnson wins Missouri Valley Conference decathlon title for Wichita State

Ben Johnson is the new Missouri Valley Conference decathlon champion. The Wichita State sophomore scored 7,053 points in the decathlon, winning the event at the MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at WSU’s Cessna Stadium.

Tonganoxie High has a league title in 2017. The THS golf team won Monday’s Kaw Valley League Tournament at Falcon Lakes in Basehor. The Chieftains won the event with a low score of 329, 34 strokes ahead of runner-up Basehor-Linwood (363).
