MHS features 9 seniors on 2015 baseball squad

This year’s McLouth High seniors went 1-19 as sophomores and 8-11 last year as juniors in Kevin Stewart’s first year at the helm. Of the 18 players on this year’s squad, nine are in that senior class. Stewart, who is in his second stint as the Bulldogs’ coach, looks for his team to make another substantial step in 2015.

The Tonganoxie High softball team enters the 2015 without familiar faces thanks to graduation. Pitcher Morgan Oroke and catcher Laney Walker were seniors last year, as were shortstop Cally Engle-Maxwell and centerfielder Marissa Martin. But this year’s team has plenty of returners whom coach Stephanie Wittman expects to be big contributors in the new season.

The Tonganoxie High girls soccer team has advanced to three straight regional championships. To make it four in a row, the Chieftains will have a seasoned group working to fill some leaders lost to graduation. THS went 9-8-1 last year and returns much of that team, but it lost its all-time leading scorer in Emily Soetaert to graduation.

Leavenworth girls win 5A title

State basketball finished up Saturday with 16 champions being crowned between boys and girls tournaments. Local teams had strong showings, as the Lawrence High boys played in the Class 6A state title game, while the Leavenworth girls captured another state title in 5A.

The Tonganoxie High golf team is the first spring squad to get its season started. THS will compete in a golf tournament Saturday. The Chieftain girls soccer team opens the season Wednesday, March 25, with a 6 p.m. contest against Bishop Ward in Tonganoxie.

Tonganoxie High has landed four players total on all-Kaw Valley League basketball teams. On the boys side, Tonganoxie’s Jared Sommers and Brady Swedo made honorable mention, while Sarah Ahart and Tressa Walker were honorable mention selections on the girls team.

McLouth High softball team looks to reach state again

McLouth High softball has some sizable cleats to fill, but coach Ballard Patterson usually finds a way to reload. Gone this year is Konner Patterson first-team all-state selection all four years. The third base specialist now is playing at Highland Community College. Catcher Amber McCown now is playing at Southwestern College in Winfield. And the team’s third senior from last year, Kayla Steffey, who also competed in track for the Bulldogs, played right field.

The Tonganoxie High baseball team has its sights set on a return trip to the state tournament. It was more than 20 years since the team’s last berth when THS punched its state ticket last year, but this year’s Chieftains are looking to take another shot at a state title in 2015.

The Tonganoxie High powerlifting team has been in existence for less than a decade and has continued to make strides. Saturday, the team reached another milestone. The THS girls team placed second overall at the state meet at Clay Center Community High School, marking the highest finish for either the boys or girls at state.
