Tonganoxie High assistant takes over helm for boys basketball team

A Tonganoxie assistant is getting an opportunity to lead his own program. David Hillmon, who was a THS boys basketball assistant, was hired earlier this month as the school’s new boys basketball coach.

Kaw Valley League coaches recognized the talents of Tonganoxie High student-athletes competing in spring sports, but the THS team members also are getting recognized elsewhere in the area. The Lawrence Journal-World recently released its all-area teams, with several THS student-athletes, as well as some McLouth High student-athletes, earning accolades. THS and MHS both landed first-team selections in softball.

School records fell for two Tonganoxie High relay teams and another competitor medaled in all three events at state in his final weekend of his high school career at the state track and field championships in Wichita.
Tonganoxie High girls track takes 3rd, boys 4th at KVL meet

Two gold medals for each the girls and boys Tonganoxie High track teams helped the teams to third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively, at last week’s Kaw Valley League Meet at Piper. Mill Valley won first in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. MVHS scored 197.5 points on the girls’ side. Lansing placed second with 121 and THS had 96.5 for third. Piper took fourth (84.5), Bonner Springs fifth (56.5), Basehor-Linwood sixth (41), Turner seventh (7) and Bishop Ward eighth (1).
Tonganoxie baseball regional postponed due to weather

Monday’s Tonganoxie High Class 4A Division I regional play-in game at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds has been postponed. The updated schedule has Bishop Miege and Tonganoxie now playing at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The winner of that game plays Sumner at 4 p.m. and then Piper and Basehor-Linwood are to play at 6 p.m. The championship game now is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Tonganoxie High softball looks to end skid on Senior Night; baseball hopes for similar results

Tonganoxie High softball was rolling in the early going of the season. The Chieftains hope they can recapture that spark as regionals approach. The squad was hitting on virtually all cylinders after 11 games. The Chieftains were 9-2 at that point. THS, though, lost a rain-drenched game to Spring Hill, 10-7, on April 29. That started a seven-game skid that has left the team at .500 with a 9-9 record.

Dylan Staatz has been competing in track events since fifth grade. He was jumping around 15 feet in seventh grade and was in the 18s his freshman year. Now as a senior, he’s jumping in the 21s.

Rain puts damper on Tonganoxie softball game in 10-7 loss to Spring Hill

After being rained out for the previous week, the Tonganoxie High softball team was finally able to get back on the field on Friday. However, the weather wasn’t much better in the team’s 10-7 loss to the Spring Hill Broncos. With a constant rain for more than two hours, conditions were far from ideal for a softball game. The infield resembled a mud pit and there were multiple instances where the ball slipped through players’ hands.
Golfers place 5th at Hayden Invitational

Tonganoxie High golfers finished fifth out of nine teams at last week’s Hayden Invitational. THS shot a 361 as a team in finishing in the middle of the pack. Piper won the meet with low score of 323. Mill Valley placed second with 340, while Ottawa was third with the same score. Hayden placed fourth with 354. De Soto (370), Cornerstone (373), Basehor-Linwood (406) and Lansing (426) placed last.
Furious rally helps Chieftain baseball split with turner

The Tonganoxie High baseball team bounced back in exciting fashion Thursday in Kansas City, Kan. The Chieftains, down 8-4 heading into the final inning, plated five runs in the top of the seventh and pulled ahead 9-8. THS held on in Turner’s half of the seventh for the 1-run victory. Tonganoxie’s thrilling comeback win came after a tough loss in game 1. It was almost a turnabout move after the first game.

Tonganoxie High athletes got a taste of the state track atmosphere with last weekend’s Kansas Relays. A handful of Tonganoxie track and field athletes qualified for the 89th annual Kansas Relays. Dylan Staatz had the highest finish for THS boys qualifiers. Staatz took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 6.25 inches.
