Longtime Free State assistant opens new era for THS girls

Matt Frost has eyed the Tonganoxie High girls basketball program for several years. A longtime assistant at Lawrence Free State, he has pursued coaching positions at a wide range of school, from Shawnee Mission East to McLouth, but has always had and interest in THS. In recent months, that interest was accelerated.
Tidal swim win in Leavenworth

The Tonganoxie Tidal Waves swim team notched a team victory last Friday at Wollman Aquatic Center in Leavenworth. Tonganoxie won the meet, 266-200. “The rain held off and we were able to have meet on time and completely,” said Janet Falk, Tidal Waves coach. The team again will be in action with a meet this Friday against Eudora at Tonganoxie Water Park. The meet starts at 7:30 a.m. and should run until 11:30 a.m. or noon.

Walker following in father’s footsteps

Tressa Walker examined her short list of colleges where she could continue her education and her athletics career. In the end, she went with a family favorite. Walker selected Ottawa University, her father’s alma mater. The Tonganoxie High School graduate will compete in track for the Braves.

Tonganoxie High boys basketball coach Shawn Phillips saw the makings of his 2015-16 boys squad last week for the first time. THS had its summer camp five days last week, with varsity and junior varsity players practicing in the mornings and freshmen in the afternoon.
Tonganoxie Tidal Waves swim team opens season with victory

The Tonganoxie Tidal Waves swim team opened its season Friday with a dual meet against Bonner Springs. Though early morning storms pushed the start of the meet back two hours, the weather eventually cooperated and the teams were able to compete at Tonganoxie Water Park.

The Tonganoxie High golf team finished its 2015 campaign with a sixth-place finish in a 10-team regional Monday at Sunflower Hills Golf Course in Bonner Springs. Matt Scharff shot an 88 and Heath Martin finished with a 98.
