Rev. Norbert Lickteig

Mass of Christian Burial for the Rev. Norbert Lickteig, 75, Shawnee, was Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Garnett.
Father Lickteig, a priest with the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas, for 48 years, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at his home.
He was born Feb. 27, 1934, in Welda, the eldest son of Greg and Veronica Lickteig. He attended Garnett Elementary and Holy Angels schools and graduated from Garnett High School in 1952.
Father Lickteig graduated from St. Thomas Seminary, Denver, receiving both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 1957 and a degree in Sacred Theology in 1961.
Following his ordination on June 3, 1961, he celebrated his First Mass on June 4, 1961, at Holy Angels Church, Garnett. Immediately he began serving in parish work at Holy Name Church, Kansas City, Kan., and as chaplain of the Kansas University Medical Center. Father Lickteig served as vice chancellor of the archdiocese for eight years and as director of the Archdiocesan Mission Office on Propagation of the Faith for 38 years, connecting the many parishes of the archdiocese with countless missionaries from all over the world. His lengthy commitment to the missions and to educating Catholics of their importance and need for support was well-known.
Parishes at which he served as pastor include St. Patrick, Emerald; St. Joseph, Waverly; St Patrick, Osage City; St. Patrick, Scranton, St. Patrick, Corning; St. Francis deSales, Lansing; Immaculate Conception, Leavenworth, St. Patrick, Kansas City, Kan., and Christ the King, Topeka. After retirement in 2004, he maintained an active pastoral life, substituting frequently for pastors at Sunday liturgies in many parishes within the archdiocese.
Father Lickteig chaired the Priests’ Council of the Archdiocese for 10 years, and also served for 10 years as the provincial representative to the National Federation of Priests’ Councils. Additionally, he served on the National Board of the Propagation of the Faith. A member of the Archdiocesan Priest’s Retirement Board, he was also a consultor for the Archdiocese.
Involvement in local civic organizations and community service included serving as chaplain of the Downtown Optimists, Topeka, and the Topeka Serra Club, which he founded in 1991.
Survivors include two sisters, Loeda, Garnett, and, Linda (Tom) Teichgraeber, Lisle, Ill.

Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, Garnett, was in charge of arrangements.
