Services for Robert “Bob” D. Barnes, 74, of Kansas City, Kan. will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, at Alden-Harrington Funeral Home, Bonner Springs. Burial will be at Old Monticello Cemetery, Shawnee.
Mr. Barnes died Thursday, June 17, 2010, while surrounded by his family at Kansas University Hospital, Kansas City, Kan.
He was born on Dec. 14, 1935 in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Cecil and Beulah (McBride) Barnes. He was raised in the Holiday community and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.
He was a truck driver, working for various over the road companies for many years and retired from Deffenbaugh Industries after 29 years of employment. Mr. Barnes was proud to have an accident-free career. He was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a grandson.
Mr. Barnes married Peggy Dunkin in 1953 at his family’s home.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Barnes, of the home; six children, Sue (Dave) Trabue Belton, Mo., Kathy (Bob) Phelps, Kansas City, Kan., Bonnie (Mark) Freeland and Tammy (Mark) Reyes, all of Shawnee, Bob (Tonya) Barnes Jr., Linwood, and Ron (Shelly) Barnes, Bonner Springs; a brother, Gary (Linda) Barnes; three sisters, Lavern (Felix) Kane, Beverly (Louie) Smerker, Sheryl (Frank) Orser; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.
