Sherman Yunghans

Services for Sherman R. “The General” Yunghans, 84, were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26 at High Prairie Church, 187th Street and Eisenhower Road, Leavenworth, with the Rev. Vernon Welkner officiating.
A family burial followed at the Leavenworth V.A. Cemetery.
Mr. Yunghans died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010.
He was born April 8, 1926, on the family farm in rural Leavenworth County, to Emil Fredrick and Edith Leota (Zane) Yunghans, living most of his life on the farm that he loved.
Preceding him in death were his son, David Stanley Yunghans (Kendahl Jones); his parents, Emil F. and Edith (Zane) Yunghans; brothers, Robert O., Zane G. and Charles F; and a sister, Opal (Yunghans) Fulk.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Constance (Stanley) Yunghans; their children, Judith E. (David) Manthe, Zane A. (Teresa Dodge), William M. (Carol DeFrees), Laura S. (Ron) Porter, Matthew C. (Bonnie Darrow), Rebecca A. (Michael) Brintnall and SFC Daniel A. (Denise Chapman); 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Richard A.
He was a proud member of the Wyandot Indian Nation of Kansas. He served his country in the U.S. Army Armored Division during World War II. In his lifetime, he served in his church as a deacon and elder; and for 23 years he served his community as a school board member for USD No. 16 and USD No. 469, the Leavenworth County Extension Board, Farm Bureau Board of 4-H Leaders, and in various other ways.
In addition to his love of working the farm, Mr. Yunghans worked 34 years for the state of Kansas, first for the Kansas Department of Transportation and later for the Kansas Prison Industries as a superintendent.
Memorial contributions may be given to High Prairie Church or the Lansing Historical Society.
