Edward J. Gergick Sr. 1924 - 2011 Tonganoxie

Services for Edward J. Gergick Sr., 87, Tonganoxie, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tonganoxie. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Tonganoxie.
Mr. Gergick died Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at his home.
He was born Aug. 22, 1924, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Peter and Kathryne (Novak) Gergick. As a boy, he and his brothers helped their father deliver the Kansas City Star in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood of Kansas City, Kan.
Mr. Gergick was retired from Sealright Co., Kansas City, Kan., after 28 years of service. He attended Ward High School. He received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds he received as a U.S. Army infantryman while serving in the Pacific theater during World War II.
Mr. Gergick was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tonganoxie, Kansas Miniature Horse Club and Greater Kansas City Racing Pigeon Club. He was a lifetime member of Heart of America Game Breeders Association. He was a pigeon fancier for more than 80 years and had a family farm affectionately called “The Zoo” with a menagerie of animals.
He married Daisy M. Burkard on Oct. 12, 1957, in Miami, Okla. She died July 23, 2006.
Survivors include a son, Edward J. Gergick Jr.; three daughters, Cindy M. Werner, Winchester, and Mary C. Gergick and Theresa A. Gergick, both of Tonganoxie; two brothers Ernest Gergick, Kansas City, Kan., and Robert Gergick, Leavenworth; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the church with a rosary at 7 p.m.
The family suggests memorials to Sacred Heart Church Building Fund, National Kidney Foundation, or St. Jude, sent in care of Quisenberry Funeral Home 604 E. Fourth St., Tonganoxie, KS 66086.
