Las Cruces, N.M. — Services for Michael E. Smith, 60, Las Cruces, N.M., are 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at Tonganoxie VFW Hall, 910 E. First., Tonganoxie, KS. Burial will be private.
Mr. Smith died Dec. 2, 2011, in Las Cruces, N.M.
He was born Oct. 2, 1951, in Leavenworth, the son of Richard and Betty Smith. He graduated from Basehor High School in 1969 and continued his education by receiving an associate’s degree from Highland Community College, Highland. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and furthered his military career with retirement from the Kansas Army National Guard as a captain. He worked as a correctional officer at the Lansing State Penitentiary until he started his federal career at the Leavenworth Penitentiary. In October 1995 he transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution at La Tuna in Anthony, Texas, working as a cook foreman. In September 2008 he retired from La Tuna with a total of 28 years of service with Federal Bureau of Prisons. He enjoyed the Spanish culture, reading and history. He was a member of the Henri Lodge No. 190, Tonganoxie, Fairmount Methodist Church and the VFW. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Smith.
Survivors include his mother, Betty Smith, Tonganoxie; brother, Randy (Yvonne) Smith, Olathe; sisters, Kay (Terry) Campbell, Overland Park, Sandy (Lonnie) Smith, Anderson, Ind.; Joyce Smith, Leavenworth, KS and Kelli (Brandon) Chop, Overland Park; and many nieces and nephews.
