Gerald Matthew “Jerry” Thomas, 73, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 in Kansas City, KS.
Jerry was born December 8, 1939 in San Francisco, CA, to George and June Thomas. He is the oldest of five children: Carolynn, Marilyn, Mary and Richard. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps at the age of 18. He retired as a Major after 28 years of service having earned a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and many other distinctions of meritorious service. His notable deployments include Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and three tours of duty in Vietnam. He had a passion for motorcycles, automotive projects and keeping active with his Marine brethren.
Waiting in Heaven are his first wife, Colleen and two grandchildren, Rich, Jr. and Christopher. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his children, Dianna, Kathy, David, Richard, Michelle, Mitch and Mandy; grandchildren, Tony, Amy, Lauren, Corey, Devon, Ashley and Joseph; great grandchildren, Max, Rainier and India.
The visitation was at Quisenberry Funeral Home, 604 E. 4th St., Tonganoxie, KS from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, December 14, 2012. The farewell service was held at the Tonganoxie United Methodist Church, 328 E. 4th St., Tonganoxie at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2012 with a graveside service afterwards at Maple Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tonganoxie United Methodist Church, Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care, 10100 W 87th St., Ste 100, Overland Park, KS 66212, or to a cancer research facility of your choice.
