Meryl E. Mitchell
Meryl E Mitchell, 73, of Moscow ID passed away on December 4, 2020 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane WA and was buried in Moscow Cemetery, Moscow, Idaho.
He was born in Tonganoxie, KS on December 11, 1946, to Sidney “Sid” and Lola Mitchell.
Meryl attended Tonganoxie Christian Church and graduated from Tonganoxie High School in 1965 where he was active as a thespian and played in the band. He attended Kansas State Teacher’s College, now Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas and then joined the US Navy where he served in active duty and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
He served on the USS Hornet before transferring to the USS Enterprise and was on board during the tragic fire on January 14, 1969 when a rocket exploded on the flight deck leaving 28 dead and over 300 injured. The experience left a lasting impact on Meryl for the remainder of his life.
Meryl made his home on the West Coast, moving to California in the 1970’s and then made his home in Moscow, Idaho.
Meryl was preceded in death by his parents, Lola and Sidney Mitchell.
He is survived by his three siblings, Allene Mattox, Valley Falls, KS, Albert (Sunita) Mitchell, Hillsboro, OR, and George (Gaylinn) Mitchell, Brookwood, AL, four nephews and seven nieces.
