Do you agree with President Obama's planned strategy for Afghanistan?

Robin Jones ( in Tonganoxie) says...

“No. I don't agree with asking our troops to risk their lives and then not providing sufficient numbers to accomplish the task. I also find the timing of his announcement to coincide with the debate on health care somewhat suspect. I think it is an attempt to divert attention from the senate health care bill. When people find out more (or heaven forbid actually read the bill) they are usually quite alarmed at its contents.”

Brady Field ( in Tonganoxie) says...

“Considering I'm going to debate this topic in my debate class, I could see both sides of the issue. I do believe that we need to secure the Kandahar Province, where most of the Taliban are trying to take control. However, I don't believe that we'll get out of the Middle East as fast as Obama hopes, whether we send more troops there or not. It is going to be a long process to bring stability to the Middle East.”

Gloria Brimhall ( in Tonganoxie) says...

“No, I don’t think we should send troops. You would think we would learn from history. You know, Russia sent troops in there and look how that turned out. I don’t know what the answer is, but sending more people to be killed, harmed and maimed is not the answer.”

So cut and run, right Gloria? A high school student has made you appear to be an intellectual neanderthal when comparing your responses.

Using your own logic: You'd think we'd learn from history. Look at what happened in South Vietnam once we fled Saigon. Rape, mass genocide, and torture was rampant for those poor people that bravely stood with us while we were there -- only to be abandoned by us. You honestly think something akin to that wouldn't happen in Afghanistan? You'd think we'd learn from history, indeed.

Comparing the Russian invasion of the country to our operation is laughable. Russia was attempting to topple the government and absorb it into its satellite structure. We are trying to destroy radical extremists and have already turned control of the country back over to its people. Russia would never do that.
