Given the recent discussion about Shawnee City Council members’ demands of city staff, should elected officials take it upon themselves to do more research on topics they want to look into?

Leon Logan ( in Shawnee) says...
“I think that city staff should be available to answer questions that Council members have. Perhaps having all of their questions and requests directed through one central person (City Manager, etc.) and limit the staff time to 1 or 2 hours per week would help with the problem. If the Council member wanted answers that exceed the 1 or 2 hour time, the Council should approve the request.”
Tom Martin ( in Shawnee) says...
“We elect city officials to make informed decisions on our behalf. In my opinion, city staffers should help the Council members and provide them information when requested to do so.”
Jean Nelson ( in Shawnee) says...
“This is an option. However, in most cases, the Council as a whole ought to determine what information is needed and request that staff provide it. Individual Council members demanding immediate replies to numerous e-mails creates disharmony and is counterproductive.”
Kent Zimmerman ( in Shawnee) says...
“Where’s the gatekeeper? Seems to me that if a council member wants to do a study, he or she should do it and not pile the work on a city employee.”
