Eleanor Large of Linwood holds a jar of stones she uses to keep track of the number of laps she’s completed while participating in the K-State Extension Walk Kansas program. Large lost 30 pounds the first year she participated in the event. In the past, the program had six team members sharing in walking the equivalent of the 423 miles needed to cross the state east to west in an eight-week period. This year’s event, which will kickoff locally with a rally at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, March 12 in Leavenworth, will allow teams to opt for the more challenging equivalent of walking around Kansas or 1,200 miles.

Eleanor Large doubted she would be much help when in 2003 she was recruited to be a member of the Linwood walking club.
