Tonganoxie High softball falls to Eudora in regional championship

Tonganoxie High softball ended its season at 12-10 after falling Tuesday to Eudora in a regional championship game. THS defeated Louisburg in the regional semifinals, 2-1, but couldn’t derail Eudora in the regionals finals on the Cardinals’ home field. EHS got out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, scoring in the second, third and fifth innings on the way to a 10-0 victory in 5 innings.

Tonganoxie High boys golf will be the first THS team to enter postseason this spring. The Chieftains will compete Monday in a Class 4A regional at Wamego. The first group will start with a 9 a.m. tee time, with the next 11 starting every 10 minutes.

Tonganoxie High boys golf was supposed to compete Monday at Ottawa, but the meet was moved to Tuesday due to inclement weather. The meet took place after The Mirror’s print deadline. The team is coming off its best score of the season. On April 26, THS placed third behind Christ Prep and Olathe East at the Basehor-Linwood Invitational at Falcon Lakes.

It’s almost time for this year’s Tonganoxie High Cross Country School 2 School Memorial Run. The run will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at Chieftain Park, with the route to wind back to the park for the finish line. The sixth annual scholarship fundraiser normally starts and ends at THS, but it will start and end at Chieftain Park this year due to construction on the THS campus.

Tonganoxie High track started the season Friday at a Lawrence Free State meet. THS had several student-athletes medal. Senior Andrew Colvert had the lone gold medal for Tonganoxie. He won the shot with a throw of 49 feet, 3 inches. Other teams at the meet were Basehor-Linwood, Hayden, Lawrence High, Piper and Shawnee Heights. Complete Tonganoxie results can be found on Page 5A. The Tonganoxie High girls soccer season got off to a rough start Thursday. THS was supposed to open the season Tuesday at Atchison, but the match against the Phoenix was postponed due to inclement weather. School 2 School Memorial Run is April 16 at Chieftain Park

This year’s Tonganoxie High Cross Country School 2 School Memorial Run will be April 16. The sixth annual scholarship fundraiser normally starts and ends at THS, but it will start and end at Chieftain Park this year due to construction on the THS campus this year. The 5K run/walk will start at 9 a.m. that day. Participants can sign up for a $30 registration fee on or before April 1. The price goes up after that date.

Raffle planned for Friday basketball games at Tonganoxie High School

A raffle to benefit the Tonganoxie High School after-prom party will take place during THS basketball games Friday at THS. The drawing will take place during halftime of the boys game. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

Tonganoxie High will be sending four wrestlers to the Class 4-3-2-1A Girls Wrestling Championships later this month. Taylor Lux won a regional title in the 109-pound division Saturday at Baldwin, while Grace Stean placed second at 170, Madison Daniels third at 101 and Ana Tochtrop fourth at 191.

Barriers and fencing already are up around the Tonganoxie High School east campus as construction workers prepare for the next phase of renovations on the campus — the wellness wing and commons area (new gymnasium). Tonganoxie High boys wrestlers will be home Saturday for the Randy Starcher Memorial Invitational. The meet starts at 9 a.m. at the THS gymnasium. Teams coming to town for the tourney are Boonville (Mo.), Eudora, Independence, Lansing, Louisburg, Piper, Frontenac, West Plains (Mo.) and Piper.

Tonganoxie High girls wrestling placed 10th at Saturday’s Spring Hill Invitational. THS had several wrestlers place at the tournament. Madison Daniels won first place against a limited field in the 101-pound division. She pinned Spring Hill’s Averi Cochran in 33 seconds and then pinned her again in 50 seconds in Round 2.

Paola ends Tonganoxie High volleyball season Saturday in Atchison

Tonganoxie High battled Paola to three sets Saturday in a Class 4A substate volleyball semifinal match, but the Panthers eventually won the third and deciding set, ending the Chieftains’ season. Paola, the No. 5 seed in the East Bracket, won the first match against No. 12 Tonganoxie, 25-19. THS answered in the second, 25-19, and forced a third set. The tie breaking set was a close one, but PHS held on for the 25-22 victory.

Gilmore wins 4A regional title, will join trio of Tonganoxie High girls individual qualifiers at state meet

Eli Gilmore is headed to state for the third time in as many tries. Gilmore won a meet on the Baldwin Municipal Golf Course for the second week in a row Saturday, taking first in a Class 4A regional and punching his ticket to state in Wamego. The Tonganoxie High girls just missed out on a state berth as a team, but they had three runners qualify individually, all of whom will be heading to state for the first time. Freshman Jocie Thomas led the girls with a sixth-place finish. She finished the race in 20 minutes, 28.5 seconds.

Tonganoxie volleyball has just a few more matches left before the postseason. THS is 13-19 on the season after Saturday’s De Soto Spikefest and a Frontier League match Monday. The Chieftains, who had played well in tournaments heading into Saturday’s invitational, had a rougher go at De Soto. THS went 0-4, dropping matches to Mill Valley, Eudora, Blue Valley West and Free State.

Tonganoxie High cross country runners hope that Saturday’s race at Wamego wasn’t their last this year. The Wamego Country Club has long been the Class 4A state site, so another trip west this year to Wamego means THS runners will be competing at the state championships. Both teams finished in the middle of the field, as the Tonganoxie boys placed eighth and the THS girls ninth. Both varsity meets had 15 teams competing.

Tonganoxie High athletics events again will have some stipulations for attendance as the COVID-19 pandemic trudges on into the fall. THS activities director Cody Witte provided guidelines in an update posted earlier this week at tongienation.org, the school’s athletics website.

Tonganoxie USD 464 is bringing back its back-to-school event this Friday. Food will be served starting at 5 p.m. at Beatty Field. At 5:30 p.m., rosters will be announced for Tonganoxie middle and high school fall teams, along with band, cheer and dance. The school district will provide hot dogs, chips, cookies and water for the tailgate celebration at the district stadium.

Masks will be optional in Tonganoxie USD 464, but mandatory per gating criteria

Masks will be optional for students in class when the 2021-22 school year starts later next week, though the facial coverings will be mandatory if COVID-19 numbers are in the yellow or red gating criteria. USD 464 school board members approved criteria for the start of the school year during its regular August meeting Monday.
