At the fair: Blog Central

While taking shelter from the downpour Friday night, I told fair board president David Todd that there never seems to be a happy medium with the weather for fair week. It's either 110 degrees or raining cats and dogs. OK, maybe it's not always 110 degrees, but it sure does get hot. Of course, we do live in Kansas... and it's August. The rain did hamper the mud run, as the rain chased away several spectators. But it appeared as though several people stuck around for other fair festivities. And there appeared to be a pretty good crowd for the livestock auction.

At the office working to post some photos from Saturday's Leavenworth County Fair festivities and took a look outside. I certainly hope the rain makes the area cooler and then goes away for the evening activities at the fair.

The rocket launch, ag challenge of champions and senior day is taking place today at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. Be looking for stories on our Web site, as well as comments on this blog.

If you didn't get enough rodeo last night, the Six Crowns Rodeo Co. rodeo is back for a second night. It starts at 8 p.m. tonight. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 and free for youths younger than 6.

Today, Thursday, Aug. 13, is all about livestock judging at the Leavenworth County Fair.
The 4-H/FFA and open class beef cattle show and showmanship judging at the show arena, as well as open class rabbit show and showmanship judging at the rabbit barn just started at 9 a.m.
The 4-H/FFA and open class dairy goat show and showmanship judging will take center stage at 4 p.m. at the show arena.
Anyone heading to the fair from 5:30-8 p.m. can drop off canned food for the countywide 4-H Junior Leaders canned food drive. Junior leaders will be taking food donations at the west fair gates and at the 4-H food stand.

A reminder from The Mirror staff: The fair parade starts at 6:30 p.m. downtown. The theme is Barnyard Safari. The parade route will start with floats lining up on Main Street. The parade will go west on Fourth Street, turn north on Church Street and then west on Third Street and out to the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
