Historic figures coming to life at historical society meeting

This will be a nice program. Please bring your children and find out some history about the people who frequented our area. Anthony was arrested for voting in the 1872 Presidential election.

Going door-to-door in Tonganoxie

A check of the Tongie Sell and Shop site will highlight problems with salespeople that several residents have experienced.

Search for Tonganoxie city water leak leads to historical discovery

Other articles in that issue listed several stores of the time and early founders. Several residents had cisterns with their homes. Thanks to Larry Meadows for copy of Mirror. How lucky it mentioned the cisterns to give us a look back at the foresight of early founders.

City Council, school board meetings next week

Not a reporter in sight for the Council meeting tonight. Very sad. Budget meeting has been moved to June 17.

Tonganoxie council member, former administrator facing off in Leavenworth County Commission race

Just to clarify an issue on 24-40. The work I referenced was only one part of the situation. I agree with Jumair about the way growth north of the road was done. KDOT has been contacted and was requested to do study on speed limit and other issues. Please check agendas as a KDOT official is to let us know the findings. He was scheduled for last meeting but had a conflict. It may be at the next meeting. Thanks.

Paula,
You are better than these kind of comments. Raise the level a bit.

Thanks to maintainer and 12345. I actually enjoy the job in trying to help our community. There are many productive ideas being considered by Council. Blogger criticism is a newer aspect to the old letter to the paper except you have to sign your name to the letter. I commented when I ran for office and still maintain that citizen apathy is a major source of weakness in our system. I have heard some great ideas from public but we average two to three citizens a meeting. All of the documents that are on our desk become public. Stop in and see facts and figures if you wish. It is your government. Keep it healthy. Because I want to look at how policys affect the people of the town, I get criticized by some who only want to deal with "movers and shakers". You've got the wrong guy for that. I don't care who your golf buddies are, your money, or how long you have been here. I do care about our debt load, raising the reserves and getting new business and expanded growth. If you have ideas come to the meeting and let us know.

Jumairs,
We are to receive the study done on 24/40 about speed limits, light at Laming and the "right lane only" sign next to old Caseys. We have discussed an RFQ for engineering and will be considering that. I look forward to you attending the meetings and informing us of any concerns. If you want to keep harping about me being non-progessive and no growth then identify yourself and I will gladly meet with you. Thanks.

Since we have hardly anyone come to the meetings I find the generalizations quite disturbing. The idea that Mr. Yanez was not renewed because of a personal vendetta is a lie and you should be ashamed. After five years of seeing the budget reserve shrink from 800k to around 200k (4% vs the 15-20% recommended) I find it refreshing and sad to hear the administrator(who is charged with being over the budget) declare that we don't have the money for an item. I have been for growth coupled with fiscal discipline. If you came to meetings and asked questions you would find that out. My friendship with Dennis or Jim or Jason is my business and does not interfere with my vote. They will tell you that! Come to the meetings and get involved or sit on sidelines and stay cynical. If I have diffences of opinion it does not take away the respect for the council. They are for the most part dedicated to helping our city and must work without much public input because of the apathy expressed on this column. Anyone can call or ask me in person about any issue. That has happened but not nearly enough. Get the facts, ask questions and get involved.
The fact that only two people filed illustrates the lack of involvement. We had one candidate for Mayor and three candidates for council. That is insulting to our democracy. Thanks.
