Eighth-grade wins two, beats Patton and Perry

By Staff | Dec 1, 1999

The eighth-grade girls A team won two games last week. The team defeated Patton, 45-18, and Perry-Lecompton, 26-25.

The Warriors are now 6-2. They are more than halfway through their season, which will end shortly before school closes for Christmas break.

Tonganoxie, led by Michelle McWilliams, Mollie McCaffrey and Laureen Donnelly, attacked Patton with pressure defense.

The Warriors had 23 steals and caused numerous Patton turnovers.

McWilliams, Amanda Chenoweth and Sarah Bradley led the team in rebounding.

McWilliams scored 13 points, and Katie Jeannin scored 12 points. Coach John Korb said Bradley, Chenoweth, Jenny Thompson, Jamie Vaughan and Elizabeth Smith played well coming off the bench.

Against Perry-Lecompton, the Warrior’s half-court trap forced the Kaws to commit 30 turnovers. McWilliams stole the ball 10 times. Jeannin and McCaffrey each had four steals. McWilliams scored 13 points. Jeannin had eight, Donnelly had six, McCaffrey had four, Thompson had two and Bradley had two.

“I was more pleased with our passing in the second game,” Korb said. “We looked for the open player and played team basketball much better.”
