Junior high girls score wins and losses
Eighth-grade A girls win two, lose road game at McLouth
The eighth-grade A team improved to 3-1 with two wins and a loss last week.
The Warriors beat Xavier 36-28, Monticello 31-30 and lost to McLouth 33-14.
Against Xavier, Tonganoxie got 17 steals with an aggressive pressure defense.
Lauren Donnelly forced Xavier players into traps resulting in steals by Mollie McCaffrey and Michelle McWilliams.
McCaffrey scored 12 points and McWilliams scored five. Donnelly, Katie Jeannin and Kelly Breuer each scored four points. Sam Rogers scored three points. Amanda Chenoweth and Jenny Thompson each scored two.
The Monticello game was a see saw battle.
The lead changed hands multiple times.
Despite trailing by six points with less than two minutes to play, Tonganoxie refused to give up.
Jeannin was fouled as she shot a layup with about 45 seconds to play. Her foul shot pulled the Warriors to within one point of the Wolves.
Jeannin blocked a shot on the defensive end, and Breuer hit the winning shot with about 20 seconds left to play.
McCaffrey had five steals, and McWilliams and Jeannin each had four steals as Tonganoxie trapped on defense again.
Jeannin scored 14 points, Donnelly added seven, McCaffrey had six, and McWillliams and Breuer scored two apiece.
“I was really proud of the girls in the Monticello game,” said coach Korb. “They never gave up and battled back against a taller team.”
McLouth was ready to play and defeated Tonganoxie 33-14.
Jeannin scored 10 points. McCaffrey and Breuer each scored two.
“The girls learned some things against a good McLouth team,” Korb said. “I don’t think we were ready to play. They learned that you always have to be mentally ready to play each and every game.
“We need to work on our half court offense if we are to continue our success.”
