TJHS A teams split games
The seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball teams each split games this week.
The eighth-grade A team beat Xavier and lost to Basehor-Linwood.
The seventh-grade A team lost to Xavier and beat Basehor-Linwood.
Eighth
“In both games I was pleased how we played in the second half,” said John Korb, eighth-grade coach. “The team saw how passing the ball on the press instead of dribbling can give good results.”
The Warriors lead 15-6 at halftime at Xavier and won 27-20.
The team had 17 steals in a team defensive effort. Three girls had three steals and three others had two.
Kelly Breuer grabbed five rebounds.
The team also had 11 assists and balanced scoring.
Michelle McWilliams and Katie Jeannin lead the scoring with eight points each.
Lauren Donnelly scored seven, Mollie McCaffery and Breuer scored six, and Jenny Thompson added two.
At Basehor-Linwood, the team didn’t fare as well.
Tonganoxie couldn’t recover from a 14-6 halftime deficit and lost 27-23.
Donnelly helped the second half comeback attempt with five steals.
McWilliams had five rebounds.
McCaffrey hit five of six free throws. Jeannin made the team’s first three point shot of the season.
“The girls did a great job of hustling and never giving up in the Basehor-Linwood game,” Korb said.
He also complimented the crowd support the team received.
“I was really pleased with the eighth-grade boys who came to the games and supported us. It is great to see such school spirit,” Korb said.
Seventh
The A team lost to Xavier, 31-23, but bounced back with a 26-14 win against Basehor-Linwood.
Madison Weller scored 20 points against Basehor-Linwood.
“We needed this victory,” said Phil Jeannin, seventh-grade coach. “We have been playing teams so close. Hopefully we can continue to improve and work as a team.”
The B team lost to Clark, 20-16, and to Basehor-Linwood, 12-6.
Against Clark, the B team lost 20-16.
Malorie Mormon scored two, Lona Dickinson had 10 points, Brandy Roberts had two and Kassie DeHoff scored two points. Also playing in the game for the B team were Sarah Hunter, Kara Coffee, Shannon Aye, Sarah Winkler, Amanda McLaughlin, Erin Malone and Nicole Carty.
Against Linwood, the B team lost 12-6.
Aye, Winkler and McLaughlin each scored two points. Lindsey Starcher played but did not score.
Hannah Heintzelman scored four points in the A game against Xavier. Laura Jeannin scored one, Weller had 11 points and seven rebounds, Ashley Elliott scored three and Courtney Schwegler added four.
Against Basehor-Linwood, Weller led the scoring and had four steals, but other players contributed.
Jeannin scored two points and blocked two shots.
Coffee had two points and four steals.
Schwegler had two points and four rebounds.
Jessica Bogard and Diane Saladin also contributed in the A games.
