Laura Korb who also broke a course record, crosses the finish line. They both won the meet.

The Chieftain cross country team made a strong showing in last Thursday’s Tonganoxie Quad, winning both the girls and the boys competitions and shattering course records.

Junior runner Alan Davis reset the boys’ 5-kilometer record, beating the old course record of 17:04 by nearly 20 seconds. He won with a time of 16:47.

Sophomore runner Laura Korb broke her own course record from last year by more than 20 seconds when she ran her two miles in 12:28, winning the race.

But on Thursday, breaking the record was easier than winning the race. Korb had to pass Kansas City Christian runner Jacqueline Strobl on the home stretch for the victory.

“Laura had to come from behind in the last 50 yards to win,” Coach Phil Williams said.

Finishing behind Korb for the Chieftains in the girls’ race were juniors Erin Seymour, Sarah Marges and Jasmine McCaffrey, who took sixth, seventh and eleventh, respectively.

Senior Kristen Korb came in 10th.

Coming in behind Davis in the boys’ race was sophomore Kyle Norris, who finished second.

Sophomore Tommy Powell finished in fifth, and juniors Bryan Gurss and David Saultz finished in eighth and ninth, respectively.

Sophomore Tony Aligo took 11th and Senior Matt Needham finished 14th after battling illness on a 100-degree day.

For both the girls and boys, only two teams had enough entrants to be eligible for team placings in last Thursday’s meet. In the girls’ competition Tonganoxie beat Lansing 23-37. The boys beat K.C. Christian 23-32.

Basehor-Linwood was also at the meet, but didn’t have a full boys or girls team.

Williams said much of the credit for Thursday’s wins could be credited to strong finishes.

“All of the groups were really strong in the last halves,” he said. “They passed many runners in the last miles, and that helped us be successful at the meet.”

The team’s next race is in 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Atchison.
