Being a dairy farmer for Russ Davidson is a family trait, since he is a fourth-generation dairyman. His great-grandfather David Davidson came to Kansas from Scotland, settling of the farm in rural Linwood where Russ now lives with his wife, Kathy, and their two children, Lindsay and Spencer. Mr. and Mrs. George Sprague enjoyed their 40th high school reunion in Martin City, Mo., at J&J’s Saturday. Incidentally, it was their 39th wedding celebration, too.
25 years ago: June 15, 1977
Open house for Mr. and Mrs. Lee Smith will be held June 19 in honor of their 25th wedding anniversary. Their children, Janet, Rhonda, Vicki and Ronald are hosting the reception at the Smith home.
Legal Printing, one of Tonganoxie’s newest businesses, is planning a grand opening celebration Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kay Emery, owner, invites everyone to come in and look around.
Dr. and Mrs. Al Bramble, Lawrence, presented a check for $74,000 to the Tonganoxie Senior Citizens Monday, from his aunt, Florence Riford of LaJolla, Calif., to help cover expenses for a new building.
Basehor: Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Pouppirt of Basehor, renewed their wedding vows on their 50th anniversary, June 5, 1977, at the Basehor Baptist Temple.
Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Mitchell are great-grandparents again. Mr. and Mrs. John E. Hosler at Nortonville, have a daughter, born June 10 at Winchester. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mattox of Winchester. Mrs. Mattox is the Mitchell’s daughter.
50 years ago: June 26, 1952
Basehor: Mr. and Mrs. Wiehe of Wallula announce the birth of a son June 13. Mrs. Wiehe was before her marriage Doris Merwin; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Treff announce the birth of a son Saturday.
Mrs. Fred Johnson and Mrs. Ruth Neibarger are natives of Texas but their husbands don’t fully appreciate Texas dishes. Monday the ladies got together and had a Texas dinner of black-eyed peas and cornbread.
Bobby Babcock is stationed at Camp Crowder, Mo. Bobby was inducted into the army last week.
Ernie Korb was in the barn at the old Korb Farm there, when the storm came up. He jumped in a truck and started to drive away, when the wind and flying debris took off the top of the bed and dented the door. A cattle shed and milk house were blown down and a barn was moved.
Bob McEnulty, U.S. Navy, came in from the coast with Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Meyers on a 20-day leave from Long Beach, Calif., to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles McEnulty.
75 years ago: June 9, 1927
James Klinkenberg, farmer in High Prairie Township died Tuesday afternoon, June 7, at his home, one mile west of the Bell school house.
Willis Roberts, age 57, died today at 10 o’clock at his home in Elm Park. Mr. Roberts is an old time resident of Tonganoxie and vicinity.
(paraphrased): W.S. Bradford, postmaster at McLouth had an idea. Why not send a lot of letters from McLouth by air mail to greet the air mail pilot (Lindbergh) when he landed in Washington. Bradford got hold of Chester Freeman, local postmaster, got the Mirror editor (Walt Niebarger) out of bed at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, to print a bunch of about 1,200 circular letters, asking the residents of McLouth and Tonganoxie to send greetings to Lindbergh by air mail. And 1,200 circular letters went out into the mail Wednesday morning.
100 years ago: June 19, 1902
A 4-month-old child of Dick Bateson died at Lawrence Sunday and funeral services were in Hubbel Hill cemetery Tuesday. The child was one of twins and the other one is not expected to live.
Will Cronemeyer is adding to the house east of the Congregational parsonage and will use it for tenant purposes.
Speaking of big wheat acreages, the Lenahan brothers have finished harvesting 375 acres on their farms southeast of town.
A blind woman was in town Monday and on the street for contributions. She was accompanied by her little granddaughter.
Uncle Sam was kind to the old veterans around here last week. He raised Gustav Schoenau to the $24 notch and made John McKone an allowance of $6 per month.
A.M. Doege has just landed a new Peerless separator and is ready for business. He is now ready to meet any owner of a separator for a contest on any terms to be agreed upon.
