Teams prep for tourneys
Most foes at the Ike Cearfoss Invitational won’t be familiar to Tonganoxie when the Chieftain boys and girls teams head south to Central Heights.
Playing for the first time in the basketball tourney, Tonganoxie’s only opponent from recent years is Olathe Christian — and that’s only on the boys side.
Chanute, Burlington, Central Heights, Anderson County, Osawatomie and St. Mary’s make up the boys bracket, while Wellsville has Olathe Christian’s slot in the girls tournament.
The THS girls team is the No. 1 seed in their bracket, while THS boys were given the No. 6 seed in their tourney.
Next week’s tournament features a state team from last season. Chanute, the fourth-place team in the Class 4A state tournament last March, finished that campaign 23-3.
¢ THS boys and girls teams will begin the 2003-04 season with tournaments at Central Heights and Garnett respectively.
¢ The girls will open their tournament at 6 p.m. Monday against Central Heights. The boys will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against CHHS.
¢ Burlington, St. Mary’s, Osawatomie, Chanute and Anderson County also will be in both tournaments. Other teams will be Wellsville in the girls bracket Olathe Christian in the boys.
The Tonganoxie girls ended last season with a 10-11 mark; the boys were 4-17.
Next week’s tournament begins Monday and ends Dec. 13. The girls will play Central Heights at 6 p.m. Monday in Garnett; the boys also face CHHS at the host school’s gymnasium near Richmond. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
