City group to consider rezoning
The Tonganoxie Planning Commission is scheduled to consider tonight a rezoning request for 5.25 acres that would allow a multifamily development on the west side of Smiley Road, north of Hatchell.
Last week, the Tonganoxie City Council voted to ask the planning commission to review the rezoning request again.
Nearly a month ago, the planning commission voted, 4-3, to recommend to the county that the rezoning request be denied.
Greg Ward is seeking the rezoning so he can construct owner-occupied two-family villas on the land.
His plans have been met with considerable opposition from residents of the area, who say that they are concerned their property values will decrease and that the development will exacerbate flooding problems in the area.
The five-acre tract is the first phase of a 27-acre development that Ward plans.
Tonight’s planning commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 at City Council Chambers, 325 Delaware. If the planning commission takes action tonight, the rezoning issue will be back on the city council’s agenda at its July 14 meeting.
