10 years ago: Oct. 6, 1993

Mr. and Mrs. George Stewart, accompanied by Mrs. Bertie Hassler, Topeka, and Mrs. Nellie Fields, Kansas City, Mo., returned from Cincinnati, Ohio, where they attended the 15th reunion of the 746th AAA Gun Battalion. (The Stewarts also went to Philadelphia, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schaefer of Webster Grove, Mo.)

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hunter attended his army reunion at Springfield, Mo., last week. This was the 167th Infantry, the 31st Division, which lasted several days. Afterwards the Hunters went over to Branson.

Jarbalo Jottings: Ronnie Mooberry celebrated his 15th birthday, Oct. 3. Ron and Tammy Mooberry and Rhiannon hosted a party for him.

Birth: Kelly and Richard Korb announce the birth of a daughter, Jessica Lee, on Sept. 23, 1993.

Following rigorous auditions, 41 students have been selected to sing with the Emporia State University A Capella Choir for the 1993-94 academic year. Krista Rahija, a freshman at the university, was selected as one of the singers.

25 years ago: Oct. 4, 1978

(Picture) An accident Monday at Wolcott-Lincoln grain elevator in Tonganoxie seriously injured Gerald Wedel after his leg became caught in a grain auger.

(Picture) Honored on 90th Birthday: Mrs. Cora Klinkenberg, Leavenworth, was honored Sept. 17 with a family dinner at the James Seeman home, Basehor. Mrs. Klinkenberg was born and reared on what is known as the Wilmer Knetter farm, Sept. 10, 1888, the year of the infamous blizzard in Kansas.

Birth: Mr. and Mrs. Kirk J. Lewallen announce the birth of a son, Brock Andrew, on Sept. 12, 1978.

50 years ago: Oct. 15, 1953

Nearly 60 relatives of Earl Schenck gathered at the Friend’s Church on Saturday in a reunion of this old Tonganoxie family. Mr. Schenck’s two brothers and a sister were here together for the first time since the death of their father, Firman A. Schenck, 35 years ago.

On Oct. 4, a reunion and family dinner was held at the home of L.J. Theno Sr. The occasion was honoring the 60th wedding anniversary of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Theno Sr., of Bethel.

Three men — one each from Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas died and were cremated. The Oklahoman and Texan came out as expected, but the Kansan sat up, wiped his brow and said: “By gum, if it don’t rain soon this country is going to the dogs.”

75 years ago: Sept. 27, 1928

Oliver Roberts, brother of Art and Menifee Roberts of Tonganoxie, died Sunday at his home in Corydon, Iowa, of heart failure. The deceased was 72.

The Tonganoxie Library Ladies will meet next Tuesday at the library room. This will be the annual all day housecleaning meeting.

Friendship Valley: Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Mills are parents of a daughter, born Sept. 24, 1928.

Stanwood: Mr. and Mrs. Earl Artman of Liberty, Mo., announce the birth of a daughter, Sept. 11, to whom they have given the name Bonnie Ruth. Mrs. Artman will be remembered as Miss Ethel Swain, who formerly lived here.

Stanwood: Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sparks announce the birth of a daughter, Sept. 19, 1928.

A stroke of paralysis was fatal to Mrs. Joseph Orr, of High Prairie Township, Sunday morning. She had resided there for 23 years.

Basehor News: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Oliver, formerly of Basehor but now living on a farm near Linwood, held a family reunion at their home Sunday, entertaining 40 guests with a basket dinner and taking pictures in the afternoon.

100 years ago: Oct. 8, 1903

A new girl arrived at the home of A.C. Thiry Sunday.

Terrence Ramsay has been sick for two weeks. It was thought that typhoid fever might ensue but the fears proved groundless.

Justice Marks, of the north end of the township, now has a telephone. It is quite likely that Justice Mark will perform marriage ceremonies over the phone at reduced rates. (Editor’s note: The name was spelled both ways in the 1903 edition.)
