Businesses slated to open soon

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Sep 3, 2003

Work is nearly complete on a new retail center in Tonganoxie that will house Dollar General and two other businesses.

“The schedule that was given to me by Dollar General is they’re going to start stocking their store — have their installation team in here — on Thursday,” said Ken Hayes, Baldwin, whose company, Cornerstone Construction, has built the center at the northwest corner of U.S. Highway 24-40 and Main Street.

“They haven’t given me a schedule as to the day they’ll be open for business, but I would say they’ll be operational by the middle of the month. They move pretty rapidly.”

Another business in the center, Couch Potato Video, should open by Sept. 15, and a coin-operated laundry is slated to open around Oct. 1, Hayes said.

Hayes has tried, unsuccessfully, to rent a fourth space in the center.

The pace of the project has moved quickly, and weather has cooperated.

“The drought helped out tremendously,” said Hayes, who will retain ownership of the building. “It didn’t help anybody else, but it did help me. … It has gone well, considering we stared the last week in May. And here we are. I think it’s gone very quickly. We’ve managed to build a Dollar General in 90 days.”
