Herschel V. Thompson
Services for Herschel V. Thompson, 85, Kansas City, Kan., will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 15440 Leavenworth Rd. Burial with military honors will follow in Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Mr. Thompson died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Veterans Administration Medical Center in Leavenworth. He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Parsons, the son of Jesse and Helen (Loe) Thompson.
He married Helen J. Hall on Aug. 7,1941, in Basehor. She survives of the home.
Mr. Thompson retired from the Civil Service where he worked for 30 years. He served as a purchasing agent and contracting officer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Minneapolis, Minn., from 1955 until he retired in 1976.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and had served in both World War II and the Korean War. He had worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp from 1936 to 1939. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church of Basehor; Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 of Leavenworth; a lifetime member of the Leavenworth Veterans of Foreign Wars George Edward White Post No. 56; and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Kansas City Chapter No. 1160. He was a former member of the Father Imhof Council of the Knights of Columbus of Basehor.
Other survivors include a son, Ben Thompson, Colorado Springs, several nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 3, 2003, Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapels, 500 Oak St., Leavenworth, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Holy Angels Church Building Fund, or to St. John’s Hospital Home Health, sent in care of the funeral home.
