10 years ago: Aug. 18, 1993

(Picture) Joe and Anna Mary (Doege) Landauer, Basehor, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving Sunday, Sept. 5 at Holy Angels Church. A reception in their honor will be held at Quinlan Hall in Basehor from 5 to 10 p.m.

(Picture) Mr. and Mrs. Roy L. Redding, Towanda, Ill., will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner on Saturday at Jumers. A trip to the eastern states is being planned for later this month.

Deaths: Martha Cloe Mitchell, 65, Tonganoxie, died Aug. 13, 1993; Robert L. Beech, 71, Lawrence, died Aug. 12, 1993; Betty Jo Ward, 55), Tonganoxie, died Aug. 12, 1993, Sarah R. “Sally” Hill, 88, Blue Rapids, died July 17, 1993, in Cottonwood, Ariz.

Births: Capt. and Mrs. Carl Hughes, Sandhausen, Germany, announce the arrival of a daughter, Lauren Marie, on July 14; Joe and Debbie Krivjansky are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Elizabeth Kate, Aug. 10, 1993.

McLouth News: Mrs. Leona Smith of Cherokee Lodge celebrated her 90th birthday with a family and friends get-together.

25 years ago: Aug. 16, 1978

The home of Joe and Fee Lenahan, Bonner Springs, was the scene of a gathering of relatives and friends for a reunion July 29th, honoring Joe’s 92-years-young mother, Mabel Lenahan of Tonganoxie and Mary Alice and Fred Stubbs, visiting from Fort Meyers, Fla.

Mr. and Mrs. Rollie Laster and their guests attended the Laster reunion at Lawrence on Sunday. There were about 45 who enjoyed the day.

Deaths: Galen White, 75, Branson, Mo., formerly of Kansas City, died Wednesday in Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. Florence Akers Ritter, Tonganoxie, age 79, passed away Aug. 12, 1978.

Word was received by the Lottie Freeman family that Mrs. Vern (Dollie Freeman) Miller passed away Monday evening apparently from a heart attack. Mrs. Miller lived in Sublette.

McLouth News: Funeral services were held Friday for Harold Kesinger, 76. Mr. Kesinger was born at McLouth, the son of the late Robert and Nettie Kesinger.

50 years ago: Aug. 27, 1953

Julius Textor, 77, Tonganoxie, was struck and killed by a car north of Tonganoxie, Saturday morning; Charles Wesley Corlett, Tonganoxie, passed away Aug. 25, 1953, on his 90th birthday.

The 27th annual Leavenworth County Fair got under way Wednesday evening with a huge crowd and a colorful parade that was one of the longest in fair history.

Population of Basehor has increased by 110 residents in the last eight years. James Grisham, postmaster, attested last week that the unincorporated town now has 370 citizens, whereas when he became postmaster in 1945 there were 260 persons living within the city limits.

Bill Holder and his goat were in the fair parade, but the goat got tired and butted Bill. He knew then it was time to pull out. Even a goat will take just so much.

Basehor: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Odneal of Kansas City, Kan., announce the birth of a boy Aug. 19, 1953.

Jarbalo: Richard and Hazel Wiley went too close to a bumblebee nest in the corral on the farm Saturday evening with several stings resulting. The little girl was stung three times and the poison made her quite ill.

75 years ago: Aug. 9, 1928

Another old resident passed from the scenes last Thursday, when death claimed John Skaggs, at the home of his niece, Miss Emma Skaggs, in Tonganoxie. For many years he taught schools in the county, retiring in 1909, when he moved to Tonganoxie. He was 86 years, 4 months and 10 days of age.

Aged Resident of Reno Dead: Samuel Kelsall, for many years a farmer and merchant at Reno, died there Tuesday. He was born in Australia, spent his early years in Australia, England and Scotland, coming to America when a boy of 10, and spending the remainder of his life at Reno. He was almost 72 years of age.

Edward McQuillan of Springdale, died Friday afternoon following an illness of about a month.

Basehor: Mr. and Mrs. Ingward Younger and family motored to Bonner Springs Sunday evening to visit Mr. and Mrs. H. Griffet.

Miss Ella Himpel of Kansas City, spent the weekend at home.

Mrs. Walter Zoellner is ill with summer flu, at her home on Second Street.

Alfred Knox arrived home Wednesday morning after being gone a month on an extended tour along the Pacific coast and several northwestern states.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Courtney of Lawrence were guests of Dr. and Mrs. L. C. Cox Wednesday. While here they all enjoyed skating at the Graham Roller Rink.

Tonganoxie has four mails each day.

100 years ago: Aug. 20, 1903

Reno: A.B. Childs is putting up a new blacksmith shop south of the depot.

Mount Olivet: The Misses Alice and Helen Gallagher are seriously ill with malignant typhoid fever. Their brother Joseph is just convalescent from the same disease.

There was much excitement in Topeka recently because smoke was seen pouring from the dome of the state capitol. People rushed about wildly and finally one man climbed the dome to see where the trouble was. He found that the smoke was a great cloud of black gnats which was circling around the dome.

The Northwestern passenger engineer who makes goo-goo eyes and smiles at the ladies on the depot platforms, is a married man.
