Free-throw woes hinder Chieftains at tournament; team places fourth
A scrappy effort from the floor couldn’t erase dismal shooting from the free-throw line for Tonganoxie in a foul-plagued contest Friday at Central Heights.
Playing Chanute in the third-place game of the Ike Cearfoss Tournament, the Chieftains made just 16 of 33 free throws. The Comets, meanwhile, made 17 of 29.
Tonganoxie had a 45-44 lead with seconds remaining, but Chanute tied the game up on — a free throw. In overtime, CHS opened the extra period with a 5-0 run.
Tonganoxie responded, but fell just short, 52-50. The loss dropped Tonganoxie to 2-2 on the season after THS lost to De Soto, 48-43, in the tournament semifinals.
“Our effort is there,” THS coach Randy Kraft said. “The problem is free-throw shooting and a lack of execution on offense.”
Addie Heim led Tonganoxie with 16 points, while Ali Pistora contributed 15 to the Chieftains’ cause.
Tonganoxie finished the tournament in fourth place. Burlington won the tournament after defeating De Soto, 44-30.
Now 2-2, Tonganoxie will look to head into the break with a win. THS will entertain Bonner Springs on Friday in Tonganoxie.

Tonganoxie won each of its first two games by more than 30 points.
Game No. 3 wouldn’t have the same result.

Tonganoxie 59, Osawatomie 22
Ali Pistora, Madison Weller and Addie Heim all scored in double figures as Tonganoxie routed Osawatomie, 59-22, in the first round of the Ike Cearfoss Tournament at Central Heights.
Tonganoxie shut out Osawatomie in the second quarter and built a 33-8 halftime lead.
