Chieftain girls roar to 14-4 mark with home victory against Lions

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 26, 2004

Lansing gave Tonganoxie fits last month when the teams squared off in the Tonganoxie Invitational.

But on Friday, the tables were turned as the teams faced off in Tonganoxie.

Leading 23-12 at the intermission, the Chieftains doubled their score in the third and held a commanding 46-22 lead. The Lions outscored THS in the fourth, but the Chieftains already had the game sealed.

“We did a lot better job of defending the post tonight,” THS coach Randy Kraft said.

Offensively, Madison Weller had another strong game for the Chieftains, scoring a game-high 16 as THS improved to 14-4 on the season.

“It wasn’t anything super, I just got open shots and they were just falling for me,” Weller said.

Addie Heim again scored in double figures with 15.

Lansing fell to 4-14 with the defeat.

Tonganoxie continued its winning streak with the victory. The Chieftains now have won six consecutive games with one game left.

THS played Immaculata on Tuesday in Tonganoxie and will play host to Bonner Springs on Friday in the season finale. The Chieftains escaped the Braves a few weeks ago in Bonner Springs when Tonganoxie prevailed in overtime.

A win Tuesday could ensure the Chieftains the No. 2 seed in its substate tournament next week.

“We control our own destiny,” Kraft said.
