Press carries THS against Metro

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 28, 2004

Who needs to jump out of the gates fast?

Tonganoxie spotted Metro Academy nine points early, but roared back in the second quarter and again outscored the Mavericks in the final period en route to a 61-49 victory in the Tonganoxie Invitational quarterfinals on Jan. 20.

After trailing 8-0, THS coach David Walker called a timeout to rally his troops.

Metro extended the lead to 9-0, but Tonganoxie eventually got on the board and finished the quarter down 13-7. In the second quarter, a 21-9 edge catapulted THS to a 27-22 lead. The game included four ties and five lead changes, but the Chieftains pulled away late with a 61-49 victory.

The Chieftains avenged a loss to the Mavericks in a preseason tournament last year in Atchison.

Kirk Rodell led the Chieftains with a team-high 12 points. Other leading scorers were Shane Howard with 11 and Sam Mitchell with nine.

Metro’s Kyle Wright had a game-high 17.
