Advance voting gets started today

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Oct 13, 2004

Advance voting for the November general election gets under way today in Leavenworth County.

Registered voters can vote in advance in person at the Leavenworth County clerk’s office in the county courthouse, 300 Walnut in Leavenworth. Or they can request that the clerk send them a ballot, which must then be returned to the clerk’s office before the election.

According to Helen Klinkenberg of the Leavenworth County clerk’s office, this is the breakdown of registered voters in the county as of last Thursday. Included is the number of registered voters before the Aug. 3 primary election.

¢ Republican: 15,006. Before the primary: 14,140.

¢ Democrat: 12,054. Before the primary: 11,687.

¢ Unaffiliated: 11,749. Before the primary: 11,751.

¢ Libertarians: 239. Before the primary: 244.

¢ Reform: 37. Before the primary: 39.

The general election will be held Nov. 2.

The deadline to vote in advance in person at the clerk’s office is noon Nov. 1. And Oct. 29 is the deadline for voters to apply for advance voting ballots to be mailed to them.

Advance ballots that were mailed must be returned to the Leavenworth County clerk’s office by 7 p.m. Election Day, which is Nov. 2.

Helen Klinkenberg of the county clerk’s office said last Thursday that she soon would mail 1,140 advance ballots to potential voters. Of that number, 297 are going to members of the military or U.S. citizens who are in federal service, Klinkenberg said.

Meanwhile, voter registration continues in Leavenworth County until 5 p.m. Monday. After Monday, registration books will be closed until after the Nov. 2 election.

Anyone who is 18 is eligible to register. In addition, anyone who has changed his or her name or who has moved is required to re-register.
