MHS falls to Silver Lake, rebounds against Pleasant Ridge

By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 20, 2005

McLouth had two chances to knock off the defending Class 3A state softball champions on their home field.

Silver Lake made sure the visiting Bulldogs didn’t spring the upset.

The Eagles blanked the Bulldogs, 14-0, last week and then followed with a 9-3 victory for a doubleheader sweep.

Silver Lake scored in the first four innings and won, thanks to the mercy rule in five innings. An eight-run fourth doomed MHS in the first game.

In the second game, McLouth came to life, scoring first in the top of the first. Silver Lake tied the game in the bottom of the second. McLouth again took the lead in the third and held a 3-1 advantage. The Bulldogs had the lead until the bottom of the fourth. Silver Lake scored two runs and led 4-3. The Eagles scored five more runs and secured the second victory.

MHS faced one of the top programs in the state. Silver Lake has won seven state titles, second only to Wichita’s Bishop Carroll, which has achieved nine state titles.

McLouth 0-6, Pleasant Ridge 1-2

McLouth’s losing streak hit three games with a heartbreaker to Pleasant Ridge.

The Rams scored once in the third inning and held on for a 1-0 victory.

McLouth committed five errors in the loss.

Ashley Alloway pitched four innings, giving up three hits as she struck out one batter and walked another. Sarah Farris pitched three innings of relief. She allowed no hits and struck out two.

In the second game, McLouth jumped back in the win column. The Bulldogs jumped to a 5-0 lead after two innings and added another run in the fourth. Pleasant Ridge scored two runs in the seventh, but the late rally wasn’t enough as MHS won, 6-2.

Leigh Anna Thompson threw a three-hitter as she struck out eight Pleasant Ridge batters and walked four. Thompson also had two RBI in the victory.

McLouth played Atchison County on Tuesday at home. Look for coverage of that doubleheader in next week’s edition of The Mirror.

After the Atchison County games, McLouth won’t be in action again until May 3 when MHS travels to Pomona. The Bulldogs then will play two days later at Lyndon.
