Obituary: Orval Dwight Nokes

Services for Orval Dwight Nokes, 75, Tonganoxie, were Saturday at Tonganoxie United Methodist Church. Burial was in Hubbel Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Nokes died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 14, 1929, in Welda, the son of Orville and Bertha Johnson Nokes Ellington.

He graduated from Welda High School. He lived in the Tonganoxie community since 1952. Mr. Nokes worked for City Service Gas Co. and retired after 37 years of service. He was a member of Tonganoxie United Methodist Church.

He married Mahlene Cook on June 25, 1964, in Kansas City, Kan. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include his mother, Richmond; a son, Robert Crook, Tonganoxie; two daughters, Theresa Hiestand, Topeka, and Tammy Bennett, Tonganoxie; three sisters, Lorna Brecheisen, Las Vegas, Ann Osborn, Topeka, and Janette Mullins, Olathe; a brother, Larry Nokes, Pittsburg; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A son, Ronnie Nokes, died earlier.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Palliative Care at Lawrence Memorial Hospital or the church, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana, Lawrence 66044.
