Chieftain girls closing in on league title
Tuesday’s win against Piper, coupled with Santa Fe Trail’s loss to Basehor-Linwood, has the Tonganoxie High girls basketball team in good position to win the Kaw Valley League title.
Tonganoxie improved to 14-2 with its win against Piper, but more importantly, stayed perfect in league play at 9-0. Trail, meanwhile, fell to 7-2 in league play with its loss to BLHS. The two teams are scheduled to play Saturday in a makeup game at SFT (10-6 overall).
If Tonganoxie wins, the Chieftains will be crowned KVL champions for the consecutive year. If Trail wins, the Chargers would need Tonganoxie to lose its remaining two games — at Perry-Lecompton and at Basehor-Linwood. Even then, that would translate into a tie between THS and SFT.
The Chieftains will be looking to take care of Santa Fe Trail in the head-to-head matchup. After tying De Soto for first place last year, THS is searching for an outright title this year. De Soto, by the way, no longer is in the KVL. The Wildcats joined the Frontier League in the fall.
