THS girls throttle Atchison in Tonganoxie Invitational
The Tonganoxie girls continued their winning streak with a 61-19 win against Atchison in the opening round of the Tonganoxie Invitational on Tuesday in Tonganoxie.
The Chieftains won their fifth consecutive game and improved to 7-2 on the season. Atchison, meanwhile, still is searching for its first victory. AHS dropped to 0-8.
Tonganoxie will meet Jeff West (3-4), a 62-51 winner against Immaculata. The semifinal game, slated for 6 p.m. Friday, will be a rematch of last year’s championship game at the Tonganoxie Invitational.
Jeff West boys 52, Tonganoxie 43
Tonganoxie slowed down the up-tempo Tigers in the second half in a barn-burner, but 12-for-12 free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter doomed Tonganoxie. Jeff West (6-1), was 17-for-20 from the line for the entire game, while Tonganoxie was 7-for-11.
Jeff West eventually pulled away late because of those free throws for the 52-43 win.
“We were playing sporadic in the fourth quarter and we were getting out of position,” THS coach David Walker said. “We were crashing the boards better. When you crash the boards, you will get some fouls.”
Tonganoxie fell to 2-7 on the season, while Jeff West now is 6-1.
The Chieftains will meet Eudora in the consolation semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Eudora fell to Immaculata, 71-63, Tuesday and will meet Tonganoxie in a rematch of last year’s substate quarterfinal game when Eudora prevailed in Eudora.
Bulldog teams drop two games Tuesday

The McLouth girls, who will play in a tournament next week at Jefferson County North, lost in a non-tournament game to Maur Hill, 65-26.
