Modular home catches fire along U.S. Highway 24-40 near Basehor
A modular home caught fire Friday morning while being transported along U.S. Highway 24-40 in Basehor.
West-bound traffic was diverted while firefighters worked to put out a fire in one-half of a modular home.
According to Danita Napolis, who was driving a signal car to alert drivers of the wide loads, smoke was seen coming out one of the modular units at about 10:50 a.m.
The drivers of both trucks pulled off the road just east of the intersection of U.S. Highway 24-20 and 155th Street.
When firefighters from Fairmount Township arrived, the modular home was fully engulfed.
According to Will Bark, one of the owners of Creek National Transportation, Sturgeon, Mo., which was moving the modular units, the fire likely started inside the house.
“Observation showed it wasn’t caused by the movement of the trailer,” Bark said. “It was caused by someone who apparently accidentally tossed a cigarette inside.”
The home was being moved from a factory in Boonville, Mo., and headed to Manhattan, Bark said. It had traveled about 125 miles when the fire was sighted. No one was injured in the blaze.
Firefighters from Sherman Township also helped battle the blaze.
