Obituary: Bessie May Smith

Services for Bessie May Smith, 92, Tonganoxie, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 28, 2005, at Tonganoxie Christian Church.

Mrs. Smith died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 20, 1912, in Prosperity, Mo., the daughter of Vernon R. and Dora May (Mills) Green.

She was a homemaker who moved to Tonganoxie in 1947 from Kansas City, Kan. She was a member of the Hazel Ridge Club and the Tonganoxie Christian Church. She taught Sunday school and helped with church youth groups. She and her husband held old-fashioned preaching rallies on their farm for more than 25 years.

She married J. Henry Smith on Aug. 31, 1934. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Smith, Tonganoxie, and Dale Smith, Longmont, Colo.; a daughter, Janet Strang, Valley Falls; two brothers, Cecil Green, Kansas City, Kan., and Vernon Green, Olathe; a sister, Doris Crossland, Kansas City, Kan.; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Central Christian College, Moberly, Mo., sent in care of Quisenberry Funeral Home, P.O. Box 993; Tonganoxie 66086.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, July 27, 2005, at the funeral home.
